Don't kid yourself with "diet" soda

I read Ultrametabolism by Dr. Hyman earlier this year. Although he is a little extreme on some topics and I am hardly an ardent follower of his, the book opened my eyes to the way our metabolism works. His thoughts on artificial sweeteners definitely hit home and I have completely sworn them off. Here's a link to a recent blog post by Dr. Hyman where he outlines his thoughts on artificial sweeteners:

I am in the process of eliminating all sugar and artificial sweetners from my food choices. Its amazing what you can live with out and just how sweet our food really is once our taste buds aren't being fooled.. I have found that a few drops of honey is more than enough in my greek yogurt if I want it.. I don't buy it already added.. I want the control.. I ususally just add a few sliced strawberrys and its more than enough sweetness for me... this coming from someone who ate bags of chocolates while watching tv every night.. I am very happy giving up all that sugar and diet sodas..

I'm a diet beverage addict, too. I rely on them for a little caffeine boost in the morning, since I can't stand coffee. I'm trying to switch to tea, but something is missing for me . . . addicted to the artificial sweetener, I think.

I always thought that diet soda tasted sweeter and never liked it. Since I have been on sparks I gave up soda altogether.

This was quite informative. I am a "diet Pepsi" addict. Maybe I need to try not consuming any and see what happens. It's worth a try, I guess.... but it will be hard!
