Heart to heart with my son

Saturday, June 19, 2010

Today was a good day.
A very good day.
Although I woke with back pain in the middle of the night - to which I responded by doing my back physical therapy exercises and fell back to sleep, I still got a decent 7 hours of sleep. Then, I did my stretching, strengthening, weights PT routine all over again when I woke up for real. (I only did the stretching in the middle of the night). Had a quick banana, then rode my recumbent bike for 5.2 miles.
Then, it was off to a couple stores to get a Father's Day gift along with my 17 year old before he went off to his friends' and jam session with his band.

We had the chance to talk, to really really talk. School is out for the summer for him, and I can sense his relief. He is going into his junior year in high school. Considering he is 17, and a boy, he exhibits a lot of wisdom most boys his age do not show. We covered a wide range of topics, including the recent break up and heart ache he recently suffered, and is recovering from quite well. Like I said, he has a lot of wisdom for a teenager.

We picked up a game for my husband, and stopped for a very quick lunch. Though he pretty much has sworn off of fast food, he had a "kids" meal because it was smaller, and he does not eat the burgers. I had a side salad, and a bottle of water.

The conversation came around to my weight loss.
"Mom, I can tell you have really lost a lot of weight."
"Thank you, Danny."
"Not to offend you or anything, but last year your boobs blended in with your stomach."
"No offense, and I know. I have a waist now."
"And mom, it seems like your fitness is now a hobby for you."
"I guess."
"Well you used to be playing video games a lot, now you are exercising, or playing wii fit."
"The games were an escape when dad was so sick. Thank you for lending me your wii."
"No problem, mom."

It may seem kind of funny that my son and I could talk that way, but we can without the discussions seeming crude. We can talk open and honest about a great many subjects, and I thank God that we do have a good relationship that we can talk.

Then, when we were walking by a plate glass window at a store I looked. I mean I really really looked, and it is so true. I have a waist. And the said boobs are definitely smaller than a year ago.

So good to have that honest and open discussion and positive relationship with your son, esp at that age. Nice of him to make positive comments about your weight loss.
