Ending a bad habit

So I've been a nail biter/picker for a LONG time. I picked up the habit from my mom when I was a little kid. It is about time I stopped. I've tried many things to no avail (bad tastes, fake nails, polish etc). I hesitate to post since I might fail (GASP!) but I am going to give this a try.

Tomorrow will be Day 1.

My first problem is realizing I am actually biting or picking at my nails. I usually don't even notice until I've done damage. My triggers are varied. Being busy, or not busy, or hungry, or (especially) at work, around other people that bite (office mate).

I know I can kick this habit. I just need to get started.

What I plan to do:
1. make the decision (check)
2. Become more aware of when I am biting or picking
3. When I find myself wanting to bite/pick take a breath break. Find out what is bothering me
4. If I can't see to stop put on lotion or do something else hand dependent.
5. Rewards!

I still need to work on some rewards. Free/cheap are best. Ideas?

    I think you have a great plan! I used to bite my nails too, but I stopped it by putting bandaids on every single finger every day for a week. I looked like a nut, but who wants to put a bandaid in their mouth? Eww! Worked for me, so if you don't mind looking silly you might try it.

    P.S. In terms of rewards - the best ones for me that are free are setting time aside for myself to take a bath or go browse at a book store with comfy chairs. Downtime is at such a premium it seems...

    Ok I'm not a nail bitter but a co-worker is... grossss It really bothers me to touch anything that I know he touches... and he's the cook!!!!!!!!! OMG I would starve...(his fingers are always in his mouth) When I walk into the house after he has been here for a long time.. ( last week he worked the over night shift) the whole house stunk.... stale spit stinks I'm sorry.. so maybe if you stop and think of where your hands have been.. door knobs,, phones,, chair backs,, pencils , pens, keyboards.... the list goes on and think of those things of being touched by someone who didn't wash their hands after going poo maybe that would gross you out enough to NOT put your fingers in your mouth... I have to tell you after 10 days of working the shift after my co-worker... I feel like a germaphobe... LOL I'll get over it... I don't trust hand sanitizers... but they may taste real bad and that may deter you... or maybe your just ready and you will do it with sheer will power.. I wish you the best of luck and I know that no matter what the habit is it just takes time..

    Good for you and if you are successful,LMK your secret or post it! My toddler son chews his fingernails {he's not hungry} and even keeps picking at his toenails!!GOOD LUCK!!!---Betsy emoticon

    I have heard that putting a rubber band on your wrist and when you are going to bite, pick, snap it. Best of luck to you, I too was a nail biter until I was a young adult. I am not sure why I quit. I think it was for a boy I liked. :)

    Do you have a nail file handy? It saves me a lot of grief if I can smooth down whatever roughness is triggering me to bite. I keep one in my car, in my purse, in my night table, in the kitchen, in my desk drawer at work -- basically, any place I can think of. I also keep a supply of clear bandaids to stop myself from continuing to bite a particular nail. Gum may be helpful too.

    One other thing to try is to start regularly using some cuticle oil to keep cuticles from cracking. Try to set up a little routine each day to take care of your hands. It just takes a couple of minutes to smooth down rough edges and moisturize. Bed time works best for me.

    HAHA from one fellow nail picker to another...welcome to the cool club! Just kiddin. I know, I don't realize I do it half the time, either, but the one who's very quick to point it out is hubby. It's usually when I'm stressed - thinking about crap, stuff on the mind, whatever. It's really gross to think about it though. I guess it's good we're not nose-pickers or something else, right???? emoticon Wow, I catch sooo many ppl at stoplights deep in thought, completely oblivious to the fact that they practically have their entire fist shoved up to their brains!!! GROSSSSSS!!!! Ok, so at least you are acknowledging the issue. Rewards? Hmm...how bout a pedi everytime you go two weeks without a bite or pick. Or stretch it out to every month. Or...you buy yourself a beauty product - bath salts, sugar scrubs, something pretty smelling just for you! If all else fails, keep the dish gloves on and that'll end that habit!!! LOL.
