World Cup, baby!!!

Saturday, June 12, 2010

I believe every female should have a sport that gets her mind going, her blood boiling and her heart racing. Something she can expend her competitive energy, passion and fun spirit on. It's another way to learn just a little bit more about yourself, you know?

Some are born with this knowledge and know they were meant to cheer on every football match possible, or be front and center to view every Olympics game. Others I believe have to seek out what sport gets them going. So time, patience and a learning curve are part of the "education". For me, it was the latter, learning my sport of passion more so in college. Soccer.
Or futbol to the rest of the world. emoticon

Part of it is my heritage. Being of Caribbean descent, loving the futbol is only natural. I love the length of the game, the skill required for every player, the special-ness of every solitary goal, and the fusion of the ENTIRE WORLD joined together with their differences aside to focus on the best game on earth.
And my god, the men. The most beautiful men on earth!!! (lol) emoticon emoticon

I mean, can we say "Onyewu?"
Wow. Uh, what were we talking about? lol... oh yeah..

I know many Americans don't understand or "get" futbol. And it is a sincere misfortune as learning to understand and love the game only takes the tiniest bit of open-mindedness. Just a tiny seedling. But unfortunately, I've seen over and over again the ignorance and stubbornness of many in this particular nation that block out even being open to something new. Hopefully that's not you tho...
emoticon
So now, June 2010, the stage has arrived again. 100 nations (not states or cities I say, NATIONS!!!) have trained, conditioned and competed for over three YEARS to be one of the selected 32 teams to play in this very 2010 World Cup tournament. And it is magnificent.

Plus this is the first year the event has ever been in an African nation, EVER. South Africa.... Africa!!!! The beauty of the African flavor infused on the event is breath-taking.

If you're unfamiliar...check it out!

Open your mind a little and watch a game or two. It's amazing to be able to grasp the physical peakness that these players have to be in just to run the length of the field at high speed just ONCE. I mean, seriously. Us with 10, 15, 30 pounds of extra fat cannot grasp this. But I believe we're all on the journey to get there. Me, from 68 to now just 50 pounds to go until goal, I see it as a challenge. How do I get my body to function that beautifully, that seemlessly...? (More on that to come...) It is an experiment and additional education of sorts.

So again, just a reminder... it's World Cup, baby!!! Check it out. Maybe you'll find your own passion for sport, and for this game. As I said before, I believe every woman should find hers.

Meantime, I'm going to be watching every game with abated breath and heart pounding. Perhaps just the sheer tension of leaping to my feet for every goal and doing a little victory dance might burn a few well earned calories.
emoticon

Live it, love it. It's the game that changes everything....!

emoticon...for reading. Leave me a note... I love that! emoticon

I thought I'd chime in, Hello all. I am a football fan (Go Steelers). And I do love futbol. My son has been playing since he was four. If he could have he would have played every sport there is on the planet. That boy loves to be active. I am a fan of all sports really it doesn't matter. Boring is baseball but I love to play it. I played for a kickball league two years in a row. It was so much fun. I love watching soccer, if I could bend it like Becham (the abs) and so are my other chocolate brothers that play the game so marvelously. Whoo, I just had a flash (heat). Ya'll please don't laugh you will get there.

Get your sport on, whatever it maybe (bowling, kickball, soccer, roller skating, softball, soccer (Futbol), lacrosse, etc.

    Peace and Love

Well I did tune in and watch it for the first time. I did not see your post until I watched it. and yes the men, muscles are gorgeous. I am not into sports much unless Venus and Serenia Williams play tennis. But I'll watch from now on. I never knew it was so competitive.

OLD_WINDBAG - If you haven't found your sport, I dare you to watch just one World Cup game. Just take it in at your own pace. It's so contagious... And BTW, my family is Jamaican, but I studied for years in the DR. So b/c I speak Spanish, the DR is always a top guess. You're very good...!

LDY_ALI_79 - Hubby from Benin? Oh yeah... I know your household is all about this year's WC this year....(lol) This South African tournament is completely special...

emoticon Oh, you sound sooo excited! Good for you!! I wish I had a favorite sport, but I'm afraid mine is ping-pong emoticon ...and watching a ping-pong tournament means getting very, very dizzy (though I come by that naturally :). I've got to find out which Caribbean country your ancestors came from. Would it be the Dominican Republic, by any chance? I lived there for 9 months when I was a teenager - what a paradise! Have a great evening... - Sandi emoticon

Haha! My husband is a soccer KING, he's from Benin (West Africa). That's the only thing he watches on tv. He refused to travel strickly because the World Cup is on. So I'm into soccer because of him. So far I have watched every game since it started.

I like it because there are no times outs, the game is played for 90 minutes & the only break they get is at halftime! emoticon

But truly I'm a basketball fan. Grew up around it my entire life. I'm a Detroit Pistons fan but I'm rooting for the East Coast, Go Celtics!!!!!! emoticon

I'm so glad you ladies are open to the beauty of this game and World Cup. Thanks for all the comments!

BAJANNURSE - I'm so with you... Celtics all the way!

SCHENPOSSIBLE - I totally feel you. A lot of teams are playing it safe right now because there's no elimination yet, and there's so much at stake. But don't worry. Past round one, it's gonna get intense. :P

BRENDY_28 - How long did it take me to realize you were in the Philippines? lol... Anyway chica, you can always watch it free online at http://futbol.univision.com/ Look for the "Ver Partido en Vivo" button. "View Game Live". Have fun!

while other nations celebrate the world cup, my country, the Philippines is oblivious to it. :/ I wish I could just watch the opening or something... But no... it's not being televised here. Someday, I want to learn to play soccer. hmm... when I lose 20 more lbs, I'll find a league :D

My country is more fixated with basketball. Everyone watches NBA during the playoffs. And I'm not a fan. Soccer looks more interesting. :D

Well said. Both of my daughters played and excelled at soccer. Their father also played and was an assistant coach for a men's team. Love the game.
