NYC ING Marathon Training Strategy 2010

Thursday, June 10, 2010

It's coming up... very quick. Marathon Training for this year's ING NYC Marathon starts July 5th. I've decided to do the Hal Higdon Novice 2 schedule.

The Novice 2 is slightly more difficult than the Novice 1 I did last year, but only requires 4 days of running.

I thought about trying his Intermediate program, but this summer is just too busy to commit to running 5 days a week. I do want to PR by a lot -- still hope for an hour or so, a time goal of 4 hours this year. But, I'm not married to that number. A 4:20 sounds pretty darn good too... esp after last year's 4:50.

There's less than a month until training starts, and I'm using this time to focus on weight loss. I'd like to run the marathon weighing 120 - 122 lbs. And, I want to hit that weight by June 20th. I want to be literally lighter on my feet this year, to help my knees & my overall time. Also, I can do without the C cup breasts this time around.... they tend to fade to Bs at 125lbs.

It won't hurt looking better for my beach trips this summer, either... at 122 lbs I can wear my bikini with pride. Two birds, one stone.

I have 3 lbs to go. I know these will be tough... but I plan to stick to it. Hit the low end of the calorie range -- more 1200 days than 1500 days- eat pretty healthy overall, and get lots of rest. Training will be a much bigger challenge this year-- I've got a relationship, a demanding workload, and a more ambitious time goal. And a month to prepare my body to take it all on.

Remember to focus on training smart. Training smart keeps injury away. I understand about not having time, I am building to a 70+ milage week in Nov - Dec for Disney in Jan. It takes sooooo much time and I am only doing 36 - 40 miles a week now. Focus on have strong training and the final number will be what it will be. Good luck!
