Packing for the Big Trip

Monday, June 07, 2010

My youngest daughter is going to Europe (Netherlands, Belgium, France, England, and Germany) this week. We have been talking about and making plans for this for many months. Every day we discuss her clothes, her shoes, her money, her cellphone usage, etc. She is trying to make everything that she needs for 17 days fit in a small rolling suitcase and a totebag-like purse. Yesterday we dealt with toiletries. I was surprised to find how many I had accumulated in sample sizes. Tomorrow or Thursday we will go through her clothes one more time and do the final packing. She is going to have to wear some of her clothes 2-4 times (like jeans). Unfortunately young people wear mostly cotton/denim that won't dry overnight in a hotel room. She will be taking older underwear and socks that she can toss out, thereby making more room in her suitcase for stuff to bring home. Wish me luck with the packing - I will need it.

What a great time she will have. Encourage her to carry things that will dry quickly, she will be happy she did, and toiletries can be purchased there. Oh, I wish I were going with her.

How exciting for your daughter! Isn't is so difficult now to pack for flying. Just remind her that everything she puts in, she will have to carry and there's lots of walking in Europe. It's a good thing jeans can be worn more than once. As a kid, I lived in jeans when we traveled. I've heard of that idea about old underwear, my niece uses it all the time. Next thing you know they'll be coming up with disposable underwear. Oh, I guess they already have them--they're called Depends emoticon

I hate packing, and I'll admit I'm not very good at it. You have a great idea with the old underware and such, tossing it to make room for purchases. I would have never thought of that! I wish you luck and YOU CAN DO IT! Sounds like a wonderful trip. Don't you wish you were going with her?
