I will bet anyone just starting to read this thinks it's about dieting, losing weight or some such thing. Nope! It's about being a teacher. I retired 2 years ago after 20 years in the classroom and library. I didn't get paid a whole lot for having certification in 4 areas, with a master's from an Ivy League school and almost the equivalent of a second master's in library and informational science. However, we as teachers, know about delayed rewards... the only thing is you never know when they will arrive.
One arrived for me today. Kiran, a student I did an independent study with in high school in the early 90's, has kept in contact off and on. Today we sat over coffee and talked and laughed and cried and cemented a friendship far beyond former student and teacher. I came home aglow in the light of that fact that I had made a difference in someone's life and she wanted to develop and maintain a friendship with me. DH and I plan a trip to her home in the South in late October and I can hardly wait. We have so much fun together!
