So glad to be alive today!!

Tuesday, May 25, 2010

I woke up this morning being carried down the stairs in my house by four hulking EMS technicians! I had hoped to never experience this again! It was a frequent occurrence (hypoglycemia) during my pregnancies, but my youngest is 10 years old now!
However, my blood sugar bottomed out some time last night. My husband was awakened by my alarm at 6:30am, and found me diaphoretic, and unresponsive. When he checked my blood sugar with the glucometer I always have at my side, it would only read "low", which meant less than 20. I can function in my 30's so I think it meant less than 10!
The emergency personnel couldn't get my numbers to read, or find a vein to put an IV in, so they gave me glucagon. I had an old kit laying around somewhere, but it was severely outdated!
I came to my senses in the ambulance, on my way to the ER. I regained the ability to speak after the nurse was finally able to start my IV, somewhere around 8:30-ish.
Needless to say, I am happy to be alive - thanks to my long-suffering, and ever supportive spouse! I was treated with fluids, and breakfast, and then released on again to the care of my husband (who clutched the prescription for a new glucagon kit to his heart!)
I'm lying abed now, still recuperating, but glad, glad, glad to be alive!

My dad was diabetic my mom learned how to get him through the low blood sugar levels. Only once it got so bad she had to call rescue. Thankfully you have a husband that loves you and knows what to do.
