Yesterday, I got a surprise of the unwelcome kind.
I awoke at around 2 AM Wednesday with terrible cramps which then progressed to a full gastro-intestinal assault and stomach pains. I was still feeling terrible and couldn't eat or drink beyond a few sips of water at a time. I managed a banana, frozen and blended.
I called my doctor and was able to get a same day appointment, even though the last thing I wanted to do was move.
It was a good thing that I did.
She says that I have a sinus infection and a gastro-intestinal infection. My heart rate was way up, my blood pressure, down and she said that my electrolytes were off and I was dehydrated.
She gave me two liters of saline intravenously. I felt much more "with it" almost as soon as the second IV was finished running.
She prescribed a five day course of antibiotics and I'll return to see her on Monday.
I'm still hurting pretty much all over my body, but the stomach pain is more intermittent than it was. Today I'm able to drink my water and I'm taking it slowly with solid food.
This was surprising, because right up until Tuesday night, I was feeling quite good. I went to the pool at the "Y" on Sunday and did some resistance exercises in the water and then to Water Aerobics on Monday and to Occupational and Physical Therapy on Tuesday, where I did considerably better than the previous week.
I suppose, in retrospect, it should not have been totally unexpected, since, due to the steroid course I just finished, I was immune suppressed, so that kind of set up the conditions for an infection to take hold. In terms of the sinus infection, this has happened before. I know that, but I always think I'm going to dodge the bullet.
So, I'm sidelined for the next few days while I take my antibiotics and get back to what passes as normal for me.
For once, my challenge will be getting up to the lower end of my calorie range! I might not be able to do that for another day or two and I think that exercise is going to be on the back burner for a few days as well. I have to give myself a chance to heal.
Judging from the muscle pains I have pretty much all over my body, it seems like I should be able to count some of what caused that as exercise!
