how long to exercise

I read how some people stay in the gym for hours and hours. Right now, I'm only exercising about 45 minutes a day on the treadmill walking really fast. I'm wondering if that is enough exercising for a begginner or should I do a little more. My first goal is to get down to 200lbs. I'm thinking that I will increase my exercise and add a 20 minutes of strength training to it once I meet my first goal!!
