6 under 6. Under 5 and a half, actually.

So my training plan called (I think) for 5km at 6:12 pace. So like any normal person (no comments from the peanut gallery on that one) I decided that a good goal would be 6km, at under 6min/km pace. You know, just a bit more challenging. And for extra fun challenge I picked a dirt track going mostly uphill. Splendid.
So this morning the wife and I woke up and went out running. Beautiful morning weather greeted us with temperatures hinting of early summer... in Alaska. The wife dashed back in for a real shirt, and we were off. First km was kinda hard, with the ground uneven, the air cold, and the wife chattering about whatever we passed on the road. But eventually the muscles warmed up, the wife decided to conserve her breath for running, and the run became better.
I discovered something interesting about myself as a runner: I tend to run faster uphill (which is fine) but I tend to loose speed going downhill (which is weird.) Can't fathom why. Short legs, maybe.
At the end, we ended up doing 6 km at a pace of 5:25min/km. Not too bad. This was nice, too, because a couple of days ago we did the exact same run at 6:25. During that run I was all tense and uncomfortable, so it was nice to see that I can relax and just keep pace.
Respect to wife for getting up way early to run. Friday morning it's 4 under 5 time. Be afraid. :)
