Becoming Pesce-Vegetarian

Monday, May 03, 2010

I know - I know - the title alone is scary! But - Jeff and I are thinking of making a huge lifestyle change. First off - let me start by giving you the history of us and why we are thinking of it.

I have very high cholesterol. It ranges between 310 and 330 - and should be under 200. Most of you probably range around 180. It's hereditary (my skinny mom's is 325) and my healthy grandfather died at a young age from heart disease. In the past year - I have cut WAY back on red meat - down to about once or twice a month and it is what I gave up for Lent.

Last week - Jeff saw a sign about how cows were mistreated - and he brought up a discussion on becoming vegetarian. I kind of laughed it off - but we have been "really" discussing it - and are actually seriously considering it now.

I gave up milk - since I found another option - Almond Breeze (super tasty, less calories and no cholesterol). I gave up Egg Yolks - for cholesterol. I have always been the one to eat the Tofurky that his cousin brings to Thanksgiving dinner (she's actually Vegan). So the hardest part for us will be Chicken. I really enjoy a good bird!

Our gameplan.
To begin - we are going to continue eating dairy - but in limited quantities. This is mainly for Jeff, as I pretty much gave this all up - we will still eat some cheese, eggs and milk - and we won't cut out things that are made with these ingredients (bread, cake, icecream, etc). This may be something to change in the future - but we have to have a starting point.

We are also going to continue to eat all fish and crustaceans (shrimp, lobster, etc). This type of vegetarian is called a Pesce-Vegetarian. Again - we may change this - but for us - I think this makes the most sense.

We are still trying to complete our plan - and I will keep all of you up to date on how we do - and if we actually can follow through on such a huge decision.

I have started using the term "healthy lifestyle" around Jeff and he really likes being associated with it.

Updates to come soon! With our cruise this week - I am not sure how we will do or if we are going to wait to start until later! So many questions need to be answered - =)

    Way to Go!

When I started spark about 3 months ago, I decided to become a Pescetarian... Now I am a full Vegetarian and it was the best desicion i made. (other than joining spark).

You will be amazed at how much better and literally lighter you feel when you turn to plant based proteins. Fish is a healthy choice too, i just found it far more convienent for my lifestyle to switch all the way - but I will continue to eat it occassionally (like at a resturant - the salmon/seafood dishes are often better than the vegetarian options).

    Congratulations again!
