Slow down

I want to slow down with my eating but, I tend to skip meals and then am so hungry I bolt them down. Not a very dainty image.
I still default to old and not healthy habits.
How do you reset your default?

    Practice mindful eating. It's about savoring each bite, each bean. Practice by eating one raisin or one nut, but take the time to look at the food before you pop it in your mouth. See if it has a fragrance. Think about how you imagine it will taste, what the texture will be. Finally, bite into it and TASTE it. Chew it SLOWLY, enjoying the way the taste changes. Some foods only release their full flavor after being chewed until they are liquified. When you swallow it, enjoy the sensation of it moving toward your stomach. Then take a sip of water and breathe and be thankful that you had this bite of food. I find, when I actually take time to eat this way, that I only eat about 1/3 as much food, and am fully satisfied.
    P.S. Sorry - I had already posted this note before I saw that you are already on the Mindful Eating team. I'm embarrassed that I went into such detail to someone who already knows what to do - tried to delete but it won't let me.

    I agree - eat more smaller meals - it is more satisfying than starving in between. And sometimes we need to eat more calories instead of less as long as it is spaced and not eaten all at one time... emoticon

    How about trying to eat smaller meals throughout the day rather than three big ones. You would maintain your energy level, and you won't be starving yourself. It is hard to break old habits but give it a try!

    Remember to drink in between every bite...that slows you down, even when you are starving...but the best advise really is to never let yourself get to that point of feeling starved...It is funny...you commented today on my blog about sleep (thanks)...My problem is that I don't know how to reprogram my sleep habits (so we both need to change a habit)...the best advise I got from someone is to "just do it"...not the easiest thing to do, but really, sometimes it is the only thing to do. So, what I am saying is that you know you shouldn't let yourself get hungry, so don't. Have lots of healthy snacks in the house you can grab, or like the other comment suggests, get small bags of healthy snacks to take with you, or get protein bars or protein drinks for ease...you can do this, know you can...good luck, and Stay Strong!!

    Apparently you break it and get a new one. Oh, wait, that's the computer. OOPS! It just takes time and learning new ways to short circuit (now we're back to electronic things) our old ways. I always carry Luna bars with me so that if I do forget to eat I have something healthy to eat. Fixing small bags of yummy healthy treats to put in your car or other places can often help. After awhile those old habits tend to disappear. Good luck and let me know what you discover.
