What a Great Kid!

I've been bringing my 10-year-old granddaughter to the local Earth Day celebration every year since she was four years old. She's just now getting old enough for a lot of it to sink in.
Last night, she called to wish us a Happy Earth Day and to let us know that she had picked up trash on the school grounds yesterday. I told her that I thought that was great and asked if that was part of a class project for Earth Day. She said, "No. It was just me."
Is that a great kid or what???
She lives in Oregon with her mother (who truly has no interest in anything like recycling--or much of anything else that doesn't directly benefit her) so I'm grateful that she's able to come and spend time with us where she's exposed to things that she wouldn't be at home. She needs us and it's a wonderful thing to be needed.
She's spending the weekend with us again. She's a wonderful child and we're truly lucky to have her in our lives.
