No Bowling! But Sects Corn!

Monday, April 19, 2010

We ended up not bowling, but it's all good. We had a great night with friends.

Our 'nephews' - the two young boys from next door came over while we were cooking, so we hung out with them for a while. They are 4 and 8 and recently their mommie got a 'promotion' that makes her have to travel about 8 of every 10 days since January. :( It's been really hard on their family and we help out when we can have the chance.

So Dad joined us later, along with our other neighbors from across the street. We all had a great dinner and chatted it up. Our neighbors call the grilled corn on the cob I make 'sex corn' - lol! I melt a stick of butter in a small pan with 1 Tbsp of smoked paprika and a tsp of kosher salt. Put the corn on a medium grill, brush, leave for 15 minutes. Turn over and brush again, grill another 15 minutes. AWESOME. My husband loves it reheated in the microwave.

We are so fortunate to have such wonderful neighbors. Sadly, our neighbors with the little boys may be moving - Dad is looking for another job. The pressure of all the traveling for Mom is just too much. I can especially see that the younger boy is confused and unhappy about the loss of his mother in his day-to-day life.

Someone asked, "What kind of company puts that kind of pressure on a young family with children?"

Nike, Boeing, Microsoft, Intel, IBM, (insert name of bank here), it doesn't matter. I think people are just disposable assets now. If you don't want the job, someone else will be happy to take it, so we feel free to treat you like serfs.

Okay, I'll stop.

The evening sounds fun and the corn sound delicious. I'll have to keep that in mind when I'm eating corn this August.

I think that some people rather like all the traveling. Keeps them far, far away from home responsibilities. If you have a happy home life, though, it's the pits.

When I was doing real estate, I might have been traveling 8 out of every 10 days but in the kids' eyes, I might as well have been--I was busy weekends and evenings when they were out of school so add that profession onto the list!

Your corn sounds SO delish! Makes me wish I had a BBQ. Or that our grill worked. lol

As for what you said about companies and people being disposable assets these days, you are 100% correct. I found that out recently first hand. The bigger the company, the more disposable they tend to view their employees. It's not a very nice feeling.

Hopefully your neighbors will find a way to make it work for them. They are really lucky to have you as such a caring "auntie" for their boys.
