New Term

Sunday, April 11, 2010

Today started a new term at Hogwarts and I am so excited! It is time again to re-dedicate myself to this team and to making healthy changes.

I have been doing a lot of research into Plant-Based nutrition lately and I am so impressed with the ability of a plant based diet / way of eating to reduce obesity, reverse diabetes, heart disease, and other conditions that I am so thankful that I made the switch to a vegan diet 8-10 months ago. If you want a mind opening read, try The China Study by T. Colin Campbell PhD. It is a truly amazing book on how plant based diets effect us for the good!

The more I read, the more I learn. For example....it is possible to be a junk food vegan. Trust me on this!! My poor weight loss last term could have been due to those vegan brownies and cookies. Once a sugar addict....always a sugar addict. Its time for me to get rid of the white menace once again and buckle down.

On a good note, since I have been eating foods based on Thrive (from my earlier post), I feel so much better. I find that I am wanting more whole foods and am stocking up on fresh fruits and veggies. If fact, I made an awesome dinner of brown rice topped with mixed veggies, a little vegan margarine and garlic with a fresh fruit garland. It was soooo good. Full of plant based protein and totally filling.

Lets go Ravenclaws!!! I am so motivated this term.

I am not vegan, but you know how I feel about eating whole foods and reducing processed foods. I find that I'm not as hungry when I eat well. I feel better, have more energy, and lose weight. So why do I ever eat any other way??? Old habits are increible hard to break!

Best wishes for an awesome term!

Now Kerry you are going to have to post some of the whole food recipes you do in our whole food thread in the House. But I guess you could share with everyone and put them in Kitchen with the House Elves if you wanted.

Don't want to be too stingy with your knowledge when that whole food challenges roll around again.

Good luck to you this term! I must say I loved the vegetarian challenge we did a while back- I made some vegan dishes myself and they were delish (and yes, the brownies are too good to be true!!)

I know you'll accomplish lots! You've got just the right attitude!!

Here's to a wonderful term! emoticon

Kerry, it's so great to see you back in action!! I know you had a rough term last winter, so way to go hanging in there through all that!
Oh yes, very possible to be a junk food vegan. I've been vegan for over two years and continued the same way I used to eat, just replaced everything with vegan versions, which is why I didn't just magically lose weight even though some people do. Oil, sugar, and white flour are technically plant based foods! I'm currently moving the same way as you though - more whole plant foods!

Yep, sugar is certainly the demon for some of us...at least that's true for ME!

Great to hear from you Kerry...!

Kerry, I'm so glad you're feeling better and have found something that works for you. Your dinner tonight sounds fabulous! I may do something like that for lunch tomorrow.
