The Good and The Bad of Losing Weight

Friday, April 02, 2010

And here I thought that losing weight was so great. Went to the doctor today, I am hypothyroid so once a year I do my blood test to make sure everything is fine. I have been at 100 mcg for years and have been fine. The doctor had me come in to talk about the blood test, uh oh. Believe it or not my blood test had come out on the high side. The doctor wanted me to lose weight when I went last year so I did, 26 lbs (based on his scale). Apparently, synthroid is prescribed based on weight and since I lost so much, I now need a lower dose. Which in itself is surprising since as you get older you supposedly have an increase in dosage. I am proud of that!! Eating right and exercising really does make you healthier.

Now on the other side of the coin, because I had weighed so much my bones were apparently stronger and retained calcium in order to hold up all that fat, lol. I have to have a bone density test done to make sure that with the weight loss my bones haven't decided to expel the excel calcium because they don't need to be as stronger. Now that would be a bummer.

All in all, I am really glad that I lost the weight and I feel great. Hopefully everything else will work out well.

I liked your blog. I have hypothyroid too. I have had it for years. I take 125mgs. a day. I didn't realize that losing weight would make the dosage lower. Thanks for your blog. I have my thyroid tested every 3-6 months. Hope all goes well with you. Happy Easter.
