Entering silent week

Monday, March 29, 2010

When I was a church janitor, this week was special. Every nights we had "walks" in the church from scene to scene where we replayed the suffering and death of Christ. It culminated on long friday that ended with a sermon where a lonely saxophone was playing while the altar was "undressed" from all silver and textiles while I was tuning out the lights so in the end it was dark and the people silently left the church. It was BIG - very strong feelings of sorrow and shame - how could we do this... and then came easters day and the resurrection and the church bursting with joy.

I really love religion at easter...

Sounds beautiful. Our church youth performs the Passion in a very dark, moving, silent way. Narrators tell the story while actors move very slowly wearing all black, faces painted white, hair sprayed black, and wearing red lipstick. Very goth. You leave there with so much to think about.
