Last September my husband and I honeymooned in England. We were there two weeks, and visited many different places - including Bath, London, and York.
There was a pub in London that served the most delightful fish & chips and something called 'mushy peas.' The fish was hot, the coating light and crisp. Divine!
Recently, I ordered a deep-fryer online, with the hopes of being able to recreate them. Not all the time - it's far too much work. But once or twice a year, maybe.
I made a nice cole-slaw the way my grama used to. I cut the potatoes and soaked them in cold water. I made Alton Brown's recipe for batter. I wasn't feeling great, but I put in a lot of prep work.
The fryer never got hotter than 320 degrees F - I was using a professional quick-read thermometer - and then it just shut off. :( I'm returning it, but I'm really disappointed. I spent two weeks researching deep fryers and I was so sure this was going to be PERFECT.
I ended up throwing 3 pounds of fresh cod, and the potatoes, in the garbage. And crying a lot, much to the distress of my sweet husband.
We looked online, and we found a place in Portland that promised to serve authentic British fish & chips, and we went there today for lunch. The place is a bit of a dive, but I had the halibut - and it was DIVINE. The fries were kind of soft and soggy, which was actually good - I think I ate a total of six. If they'd have been crisp and hot the way I like them I would have eaten more! We ordered the mushy peas - they were not so great, and on the salty side - which I am finding more often now that I've drastically cut back on salt because of my BP issues.
Then we shared a Spotted Dick for dessert. We hardly ever eat dessert - but I really wanted to be able to have a blog post with the title. Do you SEE how I SUFFER for you? lolz!
And the link is from someplace I've actually been - the Jane Austen Centre in Bath. :)
Now, at 9 pm, I'm still stuffed - not uncomfortably so, but completely not hungry. I had not eaten before we went to the restaurant, saving my calories for the planned meal. Between the six fries, the halibut, and about four tablespoons of the mushy peas, I'd met or exceeded my calories for the day. The shared Spotted Dick probably put me over the top. We walked a LOT today - we had four other places to shop. We'd hoped to walk after lunch, but the weather turned on us. We 'did' Home Depot, Trader Joes, Borders, and Fred Meyer.
R said he was a bit peckish a bit ago - and what he craved was steamed broccoli with Balsamic vinegar. I happily obliged him. :)
He bought his FIRST PAIR OF JEANS IN THE REGULAR MEN'S SECTION TODAY.
After 15 years of buying his clothes in the Big & Tall. (He's still TALL - LOL!)
I'm so happy for him. Hopefully soon I can quit shopping at the Fat Chick stores!
