c'est la vie -- such is life

I took 2 yrs of French in high school. I don't remember much of what I learned but one French phrase is one of my favorites b/c it rings so true and can apply to many aspects of life. When life throws unforeseen obstacles in my way and messes up my plans I often get frustrated and stressed out. But hopefully I can calm myself down and come to accept the situation at its present condition rather than crying over what could have been. It's those times when I say to myself, "C'est la vie!" It means "such is life" in French.

I find myself saying c'est la vie again today b/c if you've read my SparkPage you'll know that I started my journey toward healthy living/weight loss w/ the goal of losing about 30 lbs by the end of this month. I joined SparkPeople in late September 2009. It's March 9 and I've lost a total of 11 lbs. And the cruise I'm going on w/ my husband, daughter and our friends is coming up in April. The cruise was my main incentive for losing weight this time around. Obviously, there's no way I'm going to be able to lose another 19 lbs by the end of the month.

I was doing OK w/ my eating but I was really doing well w/ working out regularly. And then I got sick several times, most recently during the first week of February followed by a still ongoing case of bursitis to my right hip. My hip is finally feeling much better this week and I've just stopped using my late grandpa's cane to help me walk. But I haven't worked out in over a month, afraid of aggravating the bursitis. Though I'll admit that I could do upper body exercises, I've been too lazy and unmotivated to do them.

You could say that I'm going to fail to reach my goal. I can't argue w/ that, but I'm not going to beat myself up over it. B/c what would be the point? I'm going to enjoy my vacation in April. I'm not going to spend it being miserable b/c I am not 29, 30 lbs lighter like I wanted to be, like I planned to be. I've lost some weight and I'll continue to work on it up to and after vacation. I'll try to use moderation during vacation and maybe even get in a workout in the ship's fitness center. Hey, don't laugh. I actually did workout once during our last cruise last year.

I'm still a work in progress and in a way I guess I will always be even after I reach my goal b/c then there will be the maintenance phase. C'est la vie!
