My mom died 14 years ago, but her influence on me lives on. I remember that even as a young child, I watched and joined in as she exercised in our living room every day. We walked almost everywhere, as we had no car. She believed in a healthful diet, high on fruits and vegetables and low on meat. We had a vegetable garden. When we ever had candy, it was a rare treat and split with my sisters. So where did I go wrong and become overweight? Going out on my own, I began to like the sweet, salty, high-fat foods I had previously not had. I married a farmer, and although our diet was healthful, I began to make pies, breads, and other high-calorie treats. I was busy teaching school and being a homemaker for my three kids and husband. My exercise was sporadic. Now I am a grandma and back on track, similar to how I lived as a child. Because it was taught to me long ago by my mom, I think I find it easier now to live the SP way. I have gone full circle, and say, thanks, Mom!
