Bike tires and Thai food

Friday, March 05, 2010

Here's how it went down last night.

(Bad thought): I should go get some spicy Thai food, full of cream, to sit in my belly like a lead ball.

(Good thought): Yeah but I should ride my bike up there. It's almost 40 degrees out, practically spring! And then I'll get my 30 minutes of cardio in for ZOZO's challenge.

So, I inflate my tires, and put new batteries in my bike lights, bundle up, and go.

(Bad thought): There's a Thai place only 1 mile up the road. True, it's not as good as the one on the west side, but just go to that one, then bring it home and veg.

(Good thought): No, just keep going. The 'good' Thai place is only 6 miles up the road. That won't take long. It's almost closing time, but I can hustle and make it.

I get about 3 miles up the road. Suddenly, I'm starting to feel each bump on my back wheel. Oh no. I think I have a flat. I DO have a flat. Dang.

I rode over 1000 miles on my old bike and never got a flat. I even carried spare tubes and a repair kit, and a hand pump, every ride, and never got a flat.

Now I have a flat. But I never put together a repair kit for this new bike. Jeez. Now I gotta walk home. Even if I DID have a tube, my hands are freezing. I'd probably just walk it home anyway instead of fumbling around trying to repair it.

(Bad thought): You'll be passing the Thai place on your way back...

(Good thought)): Yeah, but it'll be closed by the time I get to it. I guess I'll eat a salad tonight after all.

So, I ate some salad, and got at least 30 minutes of cardio in.
The end.

Thanks for all of the well-wishes yesterday, peeps!

I always try to see how things happen for a reason, and I guess Thai food was not in your destiny that day but flat tire was. How profound is that? I would be one of those psychics that charges people $50 to state a fact.

But now that you got me thinking about it I won't stop craving it. . . thanks.

There's nothing better than Thai food (some of the veggie dishes are not too greasy, but the good ones like Pad Thai are loaded with calories from peanut sauce), and fortunately I'm completely broke, because otherwise I'd take a $20 ferry ride to Seattle and get some.

What a dilemma. I'm glad you did get something to eat... and it occurred to me that it could have been worse... say you had been carrying take-out from the closer restaurant and the flat made the bike off balance because of the extra package and everything went splat to the pavement.
I think you saved money and a bruised tailbone.
Truly the gods are with you.

keep those good thoughts coming. sometimes new is not better. get a repair kit for that ultra new deluxe bike ,it can take you places if you let it. i had a salad last night so i wouldn't eat so many of the kids chicken nuggets and rice ,no go. i ate more than ever but i am a growing girl. i better take up bike riding like you or at least get walking . emoticon

I wish I'd had a salad and 1/2 of a bike ride last night instead of the 2 beers (light but still...), 2 tacos, and countless tortilla chips and salsa. I feel kind of gross this morning. Oh well, it was fun. I hope your next ride and trip for thai is more successful!

Sorry about the flat. I would personally have been so bummed out about missing out on the thai food that I probably would have put together some "feel better" nachos instead of the salad. Good for you for turning things around.

You are getting me excited about bike commuting (well...except for the flat tire thing). I need to get my bike in for a tune up.

Hahaha! This always sounds like my thought process!

And Thai food is my ALL TIME favorite!! Sorry you didn't get any last night and that you had a flat. But perhaps it was for the best after all. I'm finding that my good thoughts are winning more and more these days even when I don't necessarily will them to win. :)
