Bulletproof II: Call to Assassinate the NAAFA

A while back I provided a blog entitled “Bulletproof” (https://sparkpeo.hs.llnwd.net/e1/my

After the Kevin Smith, Southwest Airlines fracas, I feel the need to revisit.
For those who are unfamiliar with the incident. FAT film director Kevin Smith was flew standby on a Southwest airplane, usually he chooses to buy two seats, but this time on standby he could only get one. Before takeoff the pilot decided that Smith was too fat to fly and kicked him off the plane. This sent the indie film maker on a twitter rampage and brought a series of news stories about the subject. In each of these news articles (I heard a few of them in the 43 podcasts I subscribe to) they had someone from NAAFA talking. That is where my anger and rage comes into play.
NAAFA stands for the National Association of Fat Acceptance. (Naafa.org) This is an organization that helps to make obesity bulletproof. In their mission statement they state that 95 to 98 percent of diets fail over five years. However, rather than a being a community of fat people who strive to help one another with the lifelong struggle with weight, ala sparkpeople.com, this is an organization that enables FAT. It embraces it, and demands that the rest of the nation embrace it as well.
Their motto is:
We Come in all sizes
Understand It
Support it
Accept it.
Unbelievable.
This is an organization that does not provide any front line level of assistance for FAT people to become healthier. They are simply demanding that that rest of society ACCEPT and SUPPORT them along their path of self destruction. This is mind boggling. There are millions of FAT people across this nation killing themselves every day with the same system of eating more and moving less. It is a viscous cycle of eating a little more and moving a little less each day that reduces the energy and drive in the individual to do anything other than, eat more and move less.
However, the difficulty in losing weight cannot and must not be used by an organization to facilitate the suffering of an entire subset of the population, and that is what the NAAFA does. They are facilitating the rise of FAT in this country, and for that the organization needs to be destroyed.
From the ashes of this failed concept a new organization should emerge. There is one nugget of truth with what the NAAFA says, FAT people should not be discriminated against or persecuted. Where they are wrong is they should not be placated or coddled. What FAT people need is an organization that understands their pain and suffering and does everything it can to assist them on their life long journey to health.
The NAAFA is another piece of armor helping to make obesity bulletproof.
I know what it is like to be FAT. I know how hard it is to lose weight. In the past I was a GIANT FAT guy. I am 6’6” tall, and at my peak weighed 400. After my own string of failed diets and weak willed weight loss efforts, I finally had my breakthrough. From February to October of 2009 I lost 100 pounds. Since then I have hovered between 275 and 285. I will lose more weight in the future, but I am thrilled with who I have become now,and it would have never happened had the NAAFA got its claws in me.
