#243: Fulfilling Our Potential

Saturday, February 27, 2010

I read in our local newspaper that Albert Einstein never spoke until he was four years old and didn't read a word for another three years. A teacher called him "mentally slow, unsociable and adrift in foolish dreams."

Also, that Walt Disney was fired from a newspaper job because an editor insisted Disney "lacked imagination and had no good ideas."

Then the article detailed the story of Mark King who wants to play in the National Basketball Association. The same Mark King who was cut five times from junior high and high school basketball teams. The same Mark King who was laughed at in school when he announced his NBA dream.

Then, one day, Psalm 37:4 crossed his mind. "Delight yourself in the Lord and he will give you the desires of your heart." To King, that meant God could use his passion for good.

Although his dream of actually playing in the big leagues may never be fulfilled, King has arranged to bring a developmental team to Orlando in the spring.

"Most people don't have the faith to try," King says. "They get sucked into what the world says should be. Did I make the NBA? No. But here's the deal: Dreams are the road map that God uses to get us where we're supposed to be."

Have you fulfilled your potential? Or have you allowed the world to dictate what you should do?

As King added, "Sometimes you have to create your own shot."

Be like Albert Einstein or Walt Disney or Mark King. Don't let others tell you what you can not do.

Follow your dreams. Follow your passions. Now, today. Tomorrow may be too late.

I have frequently used other people's "you can't /won't /will never" as a challenge - I was told I'd never go thru with emigrating to South Africa. Huhh got that wrong didn't they! I'd never be able to stand on my own 2 feet! Huhh double time - widowed twice &no insurance - saved the house, educated the kids.

Words can do so much damage but how we receive and deal with them makes all the difference. Seems I can thrive with a challenge.

I think you meant *BE like Albert Einstein or Walt Disney or Mark King. Don't let others tell you what you can not do.

Sad to say , all my life I have allowed others to tell me what I can and can't do. At 60 I am now trying to follow my dreams and passions. I guess I am a late bloomer. Thank you for this encouraging blog. Joy

As always, a wonderful blog, Lou. It is good to remind each other that we CAN follow our dreams. Too many times the world wants to squelch those dreams. Thanks for the great reminder that we can.

What a wonderful blog,Lou. I have dreamed so many things and because of others words or thoughts they have never seen the light of day until recently when I came across this site on the internet. My dreams are coming together because of people like yourself. Thank you for all your words of encouragement.

People have always told me I could not do what I wanted to do.
    1. My girlfriend told me I could not be a movie star because I did not have light blonde hair. She did, She also told me that blondes with brown eyes were highly unusual and more apt to be movie stars. She had brown eyes.
    2. My high school principal told me to take office courses to get a clerical job so I could raise my boys.
    3. My Dr. told me to stay at home with the boys and raise them. That was the only job I needed to do. I wanted to ask him who was going to pay for groceries, but I didn't.
    4. My mother told me to do the very best I could in whatever I wanted to do. So I did.
I earned my BA degree in three years. Even transferred from one college to another. Don't let anyone tell you what you cant do. If you want something badly enough, you can get it.

Your blog was great, Lou. I wish I had an idea of what my dreams are, really. I'll have to think on that a while. It seems all the things I dreamed about (having our kids stay close, babysitting my grandkids, etc.) were evaporated into the thin air. I guess I need to find some new ones.
