Reality Bites...

Monday, February 22, 2010

So I went to the cardiologist's office again today for my follow-up appointment. The 24-hour EKG monitor showed a few abnormal beats, but nothing like I'd been experiencing that had me worried (of course). She said that right now, they weren't going to obsess over the irregular beats I'd been feeling unless it became more frequent or lasted for longer periods of time. That's the good news. The BAD news? Well, my fasting blood sugar level was good, my two-hour blood sugar level (after drinking the glucose mixture) was good, and my fasting insulin level was good. However, my 2-hour insulin level was NOT--it was quite high. The Nurse Practitioner said that basically I am pre-diabetic. She wanted to put me on Metformin (Glucophage) right then and there, but I talked her out of it. So she and I decided it was time for me to get off my ass and get back on the exercise routine...at least 30 minutes a day...45-60 would be even better. So I just did 30 minutes on the treadmill...at 2 mph...with no incline. At least it's a start! I guess I've found my motivation...

Christy-I can so relate. A little over 2 years ago I did the same thing. My endrocronologist (sp?) said the same. I was overweight, and having issues with dropping blood pressure, fainting spells and heart racing. She felt I was pre-diabetic (even tho my blood sugar was o.k.). She put me on metformin and I took it for a while. The next check-up I was still having the same symptoms and I said I wasn't taking them any more. She told me that it might jump start my weight loss-I ask why I couldn't do it the regular way with diet and exercise. She got angry and tore the prescription up. The next year on my visit I was 70lbs. lighter and felt a heck of a lot better. She now hands out spark people cards to all her patients and uses me as an example. Long story...way to stick to your guns! You can do this.

I'm glad the Nurse Practitioner gave you the opportunity to make some lifestyle changes rather than putting you on meds right away. That's a GOOD thing. Now it's up to you to make those healthy changes. You're doing it right, which is to start slow. Just keep that log updated and keep increasing the time or the intensity. In a couple of months you'll be wondering why you hadn't started sooner! emoticon
