Beauty Salon business

Friday, February 19, 2010

I am officially tired of my job. I have been here for 19 years and I am done with the gossiping, childishness, disrespect and depressing situations. I need to take the skills I have learned and apply them to something useful and something where I will feel appreciated and my accomplishments will benefit me. I have always had the desire to be a beauty salon owner. If I need to take any type of risk it is going to be at my hands. This is what I really want. I have been researching what I have to do to start one. I have found books and CDs but I feel like I need someone who is either in the business or knows about it. I cannot figure out if I need to take classes in financial management or any type of classes for that matter. I am familiar with doing hair because I have done hair before and have been to school a long long time ago but never received a license. I read that you didn't need a license to do hair if you just want to run a salon and that's really all I want to do. I am really feeling this. I have told my DH and friends about it but they do not seem to be very supportive about my decision. I am just ready to leave this place once my business takes off, which I know will take some time, but I really want to work towards accomplishing something for me. It has always been my dream and I have always felt like I needed to be in business for myself and wish I started this long ago.

Do anyone know or has a business like this and can give me some pointers. I just need a point in the right direction. If not, some motivation and good words will help me towards my goal. If anyone can help please hit me an email.

Was hoping to win the lottory but it's taking too long...LOL

I helped a friend who owns a salon and spa and observed a few things.
Check your profit margins, the spa side of her business makes more money than the hair cutting portion.
Find a partner you can trust who has the skills you don't have. expect to treat this partnership like a marriage it takes work and communication.
Find a method of rewarding your employees for helping you grow your business ie if they bring clients with them, if you make and set business goals, encourage selling product and give bonuses on group effort so they work together.
    Enjoy what you do.
Give your customers more than they expect (reward them for patronage and give them a little something for referring new customers) check out the book Hug Your Customers by Jack Mitchell
Find a great accountant to guide you.
Check with SCORE. There should be an office in your area. It is retired and experienced business people who help new businesses get started. Their website is www.scoreworks.org they can help you set up your business plan and get your focus going in a healthy direction.
Don't forget to use your spark tools. take them and apply them to your business instead of your health and fitness.
Remember sometimes the people closest to you will be your dreamstealers because they are afraid that things are going to change and they don't know what to expect.

I'm not in the business but I believe there is a market out there for someone who does black hair and knows how to treat customers fairly. Someone who does not make them wait for hours...

Also have you considered a spa that does black hair..all hair types? I wish you luck!
