Major goal met

Wednesday, February 17, 2010

As of February 15th it has been 1 full year since I have had even a sip of any kind of soda.
At first, I will be honest it was a very difficult task, because old habits are so hard to break. I dont know how many times that while "driving thru" somewhere, I would be on autopilot and order a combo w/a drink, and then when I get to the window, I REALIZE THE HUGE TEMPTATION I JUST PUT ON MYSELF.

Honestly, after about 2 months it actually got easier, I made NEW habits I started bringing my own cup when we would go out somewhere so I could have a large cup of water instead of the tiny "courtesy" cup they give you for free (that I would need to refill 10 times during a meal). Having a plan before we got to the restaurant, was huge, it helped so much when I had already made up my mind on what I would order. It would save me from ordering that one extra item just because "I might be hungrier than I thought."
After I had been off of soda for about 4 months someone said something that caused me to stop drinking other liquids as well, like milk, punch, juice, starbucks, shakes, ect.
What she said was "I do my best to not drink my calories, because my calories are limited." She went on to explain that, "Since I live on limited calories WHY would I steal from the nutrients I need in food to drink EMPTY CALORIES that have very little if any nutritional value that would help me toward my ultimate goal."

Tough decisions have to be made, or else everyone would be able to shop for clothes at the cool stores. Right???

I have long thought the same thing your friend said to you. I gave up Starbucks for that very reason. I drink black coffee (2-3 cups/day.) And during the summer or at restaurants, I always order unsweetened iced tea. I always got tired of the sugar not dissolving (in the "old" days!), so I started ordering it unsweetened. And when McDonalds had a large one for $1, I couldn't pass it up! (But I DID pass up the food!) Giving up soda wasn't hard because I rarely drink it - or alcohol - anyway. If I do, I try and "plan" for it, ie: 2 (GOOD microbrews!) beers during Superbowl! And I drink about a 6 oz glass of 1% milk a day.

If I REALLY want Starbucks, I order a "tall" instead of "venti" NONfat Caramel Macchiato, and save about 200 calories! And I SAVOR it! It's MAYBE a once a week treat! And I'm willing to give up a snack for it!

Anyway, congrats on your "milestone!" I just passed one myself - 8 years since I quit smoking on Feb 7th! Spending the money instead on travel trailer payments! (Cheaper actually, than the monthly smoking habit! AND I can write if off as a "second home" on my taxes!)

And someday WE will be shopping the "cool stores!"

    Peace out, boy scout!

That's great to hear. Congrats! I have cut down on my soda and milk intake soooo much. I went from about 2-3 gallons per week to less then 1 gallon of milk (2% of course, have been drinking that since I was a teenager) And my soda intake has went from several liters per week to almost nothing. But I still need to have it when I eat pizza, as less often as I do that too!

I had to smile while reading that. I gave up drinking pop several years ago and don't miss it at all. Well, ok.. I drink it with rum sometimes, lol. You are absolutely right tho about not drinking your calories. Thats one of the reasons I don't drink juice either.. give me the actual fruit instead.

Congrats on the 1 yr anniversary!!
