Me and my medication

Monday, February 15, 2010

So, it's almost been a week since I started taking the tablets for my sciatica. So far, I haven't noticed any difference - it still hurts to stand up straight, I went into town yesterday and barely made it 1/4 of a mile before my back started spasming, and that was agony. Luckily, I was only a few feet away from the caf I was going to have lunch in with myself, so I got to sit down for a half hour.

When I went to bed last night, I was able to stand up straight. I was able to bend over to take my socks off instead of sitting on the bed and grimacing as I pulled one leg up at a time.

This morning when I woke up, it was like I was back to being a 90-year-old lady (and to top it off, I have such a headache it's not funny! I have a feeling that it's caffeine withdrawal, because I've not had coffee in three days and I've not had soda in about a week) with the back pain!

On the plus side, I have a new bra that it holding my breasts up better, so I hope it will afford me better posture, which in turn will help my back.

I have two days' worth of pills left for the back spasms, taking me back to Wednesday, and I'm hoping that the pain's at least manageable by then. I'll see how I feel on Wednesday, and if it's no better, then it's on the phone to get another appointment, and back to my doctor!

Ah well, at least the swimming is going well. I'm getting SOME exercise in every week, if nothing else.

EDIT: How very odd. My back's been killing me all day, and I've just come out of the swimming pool - managed a half mile with Mum again, the pool was insane! - and when we were walking to the car, I said, "... my back isn't hurting me. I'm standing up straight, and my back isn't hurting me!"

I'm hoping this is the start of the medication working. If not, I'll take your advice, CELEST, and get Mum to do the press-y thing. I certainly sit long enough - the joys of being A) a graphic designer and B) unemployed!

    Hiya,

Hear you on the pain! What have they got you on in the way of anti-convulsants? Really hope it kicks in- sometimes you have to get up to a therapeutic level in your bloodstream- or Celest's advice works :)

I'm not going to say something like breathe through it, but we will GET through it with sheer bloody mindedness...

    Hi Tracy,

I hear you on the pain, I was twelve weeks pregnant with my first daughther I could not take anything for the pain for my severely pinched sciatic nerve. I would have to agree though, being in the water relaxes your muscles and allows for non-impact as well as warming-up tightened & strained muscles. Just a suggestion, but have you tried streching working through the pain and swimming more it might alleviate the pain.

Have a great week, take care ! Josée emoticon

You know, I wanted to say the other day that sciatica can be fixed with reflexology, but since you went the medicine route I didn't want to interfere. Even your hubby can do this for you. About a fist space from your coccyx onto the cheek is where your sciatica sits. You need to lie flat on yr tummy on the bed and let him use his thumb and push lightly. He can feel around till you YELL thats the spot. He needs to hold it in as long as you can handle it. Its PAINFUL, but its the quickest way to get relief from a hurting sciatica. I do my nephews because he pushed around heavy carpet cleaning equipment and he has an exceptionally slight frame and long back. Many travelling reps get sciatica problems. It comes from sitting many hours.

Oh man, I was hoping the meds would be more helpful by now! I know when I was having back problems, though, it was kind of one step back then 2 forward (and sometimes vice versa). I'm proud of you for continuing to find ways to be positive, and for continuing to get in your swimming!

I have to admit, the part about the bra made me smile...that's one way to find a silver lining in all this! I hope your meds kick in and you start feeling pain free!
