Went to the doctor this morning, explained my symptoms, he stretched my legs, asked me to touch my toes etc, and then turned to me and said, "Yeah, it looks like you've pinched your sciatic nerve. Of course this probably has something to do with your weight - are you doing something about that? (Yeah, I said, I'm actively doing something to lose weight, but the back pain's stopping me from exercising right now.) - I can give you some anti-convulsants to help with it. Take these tablets for the next week, and if it's still sore, come back and we'll see what else we can do."
So after 6 years of severe and sometimes debilitating back pain, I finally have a diagnosis, and tablets to help me with it. I'm going to look out my MegaYoga book and see if there are any poses I can try to help gently stretch my back, and keep up with the swimming.
And once again, to all other SparkPeople who have commented and sent me such good messages, so many good thoughts in my direction: thank you. I hope that these tablets help - although they are making me very sleepy! - and by the end of this week of meds that I can go back to my aerobics.
