Whining

Friday, February 05, 2010

Since I whined in my status update today, I thought I would turn that seemingly "bad" stuff into good in my blog.

I didn't get much sleep last night because of noisy people in my house. It was the first night I'd spent at home since December, so my sleepless nights have been kept to a minimum as opposed to the days when I had no where else to go and the same thing happened. Plus, I was able to finish reading Her Fearful Symmetry and start The Lacuna, which I couldn't have done in my sleep.

No hot water this morning. Well, if I'd remembered to turn the electrical back-up on (our water heater is solar and without the sun, there's no hot water) while I wasn't sleeping, then I would have had hot water at home this morning (it takes about 2 hours to fully heat the tank.) If I'd done that, I would have used more electricity which is getting quite expensive. I probably wouldn't have remembered to turn the electricity off after my shower, so I would have been burning additional electricity all day today.

The other good thing about this is that I have the ability to shower at work. We have a wonderful set-up in my building (one of three connected buildings) with 5 showers, dozens of lockers and good lighting. The hot water is plentiful and I'm not paying for the electricity to heat it. It was a ghost town in the locker room this morning since it's a furlough day, so I had the place to myself. I already had my running bag packed (the bag with my toiletries, towel, extra clothes, etc. for when I run during the week,) so I didn't forget anything.

Lastly, the Arco ATM. Well, if I'd showered at home this morning, I probably would have gone inside the store to pay for my gas instead of getting frustrated with the machine that kept refusing my $10 and $5 and the ATM slot which although it accepted my card, told me the Network was down. My gas light just went on so I should have plenty of gas for the drive home. Maybe I'll find a cheaper station. Maybe I'll get some crisp $20 from the ATM at work so I can pay cash for my gas and not get stuck with the $.45 ATM fee.

The day is looking better already. It's after 10 and I'm ready for a walk in the sun.

Thanks for listening!

We don't have solar heating our water but we recently had solar paneling installed on our roof for running the electricity for our home. DRASTICALLY reduced our monthly bills. We did it at the right time, very nice rebate from the state and federal government. I understand the lack of hot water, that used to happen to me while growing up. Have a good one.

Being able to shower at work was a blessing. To save money you could do that almost every day you work. Having to turn the heat off and on for your water heater must be a pain though. My gas water heater doesn't cost too much to heat, but electric, OUCH.

I can woefully relate to the lack of hot water at home. It used to happen to me ALL THE TIME. I went tankless and no more problem AT ALL..

Glad you had all the options available to you.. Thank goodness for furloughs. emoticon

There is always a bright side to everything.I know about Solar. When I first moved to Southern Calif.I stayed at my sisters house.10 miles from Temecula,no electric y.we had to use oil lamps and solar power. Now it is a city type area and her home is worth a lot.She still uses some solar.
