I DID IT!!!

Friday, February 05, 2010

Somehow, I managed to sail through Week 1, Day 1 of Couch to 5K today! I'm so stinkin' proud of myself. :)

I knew I could do it. I mean, I've tried before and I did all right for a bit (running on a treadmill). This time it was outside (treadmills just kill my ankle that I sprained awhile back, not to mention triggering my vertigo). I don't think I've run outside since...oh wait, I was about to lie. I did jog a bit at one of the walks that we did last year with my local team. But, it wasn't for an incredibly long time (not that this was all that long, either).

I haven't consistently run outside since I was in high school. A freshman in high school. Which was...um...13-14 years ago.

Look at me, I'm a blur! heehee!

It was great because there were all of these fun songs coming on my iPod. The one that cracked me up the most came on towards the end of my workout, during the last rep that I was doing. "Hunk of Burnin' Love" as performed by Wynona Judd.

The part that cracked me up was I was jogging, feeling my temperature rising and I was just noticing that. Right as I was thinking about how I was getting warmer, Wynona came over singing "I feel my temperature risin'..." Then, as I was trying to focus on my breathing towards the end of the final one-minute jog, she came over singing "My chest just starts a-heavin'..." And I couldn't help but laugh again.

It was a fun way to end my workout.

And, when I got home, there was a happy little present sitting in my mail box!

This, my friends, is what is known as a Nike+ iPod. It's a little adapter that plugs into your iPod that receives a wireless signal from the orange, oval Nike+ chip.

Now, if you had the special Nike+ shoes, there is a little divot cut into the shoe, hidden under the inner sole right around the arch of the shoe. Since my shoes are not Nike+ shoes they have no special little dip for my chip. (heehee, couldn't resist, everyone's been talking about food for SuperBowl parties). At any rate, Nancy-Girl keeps hers tucked under her laces and I thought I could do very much the same thing.

I only managed to turn it on and play with it for a few minutes--I haven't done any actual walking or anything with it. Saturday will be the test, as I'll be walking with my local Spark team at the mall AND also doing Day 2 of C25K.

I took a look at the program that nikerunning.com has for doing a 5K and it's really not somehting I'm capable of at this point--it assumes you're already running on a regular basis (which I'm not...yet). But, they do have a program for beginning runners that I had put on my iPod. It's a combination of walking and running that will get you to the point of running 25 minutes within 12 weeks.

For now, I'm sticking with the C25K program, which puts me at running a 5K in 8 weeks (right around the time that I will be doing the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure).

Oh, the other exciting news! And no, I'm not going to post a picture of this. Fellas (if you even read this), beware, this one's for the ladies. One of the things that I struggle with (as I'm sure a lot of larger-chested women do) is finding a bra that works while I'm working out. I've been wearing just an old bra that I don't really care about but still gives me decent support. I read through an article on here awhile back about picking out the right bra for your size and activity level. Tuesday, since I was at home with nothing else to do (dumb vertigo), I went poking around and found the article again. It took me to several different sites where I began looking for sports bras. Now, my thing is that I cannot (and should not, according to the article) wear a typical sports bra. For one, it gives me what one of my former roommates affectionately referred to as a "uni-boob". For two, it doesn't give me the support I need. And three, I end up bouncing all the more because there is that much more weight in my bra (like you needed to know all of these details).

So, I went in search of a bra online. And man, are they pricey. But, one of the places they recommended looking was on JustMySize.com. They didn't really have anything there that I was interested in, but it occurred to me that JCPenney's carries the JustMySize brand. I had free time this afternoon, after my walk/run and before I discovered the nike+. I stopped off at the mall, figuring it wouldn't hurt to look.

I asked the sales clerk and immediately, she took me over to the wall that has their sports bras. Lo and behold! I managed to get not one, not two, but three bras for the price I would have paid online (plus shipping and handling). I even gave it a "test run" when trying them on in the fitting room (bouncing up and down and jogging in place).

I LOVED IT!

So, I'm excited about my new toy and I'm excited about having another piece of necessary...um...equipment that will help in this journey!

P.S. If anyone is offended by the bra talk, I'm sorry, but it was something I felt needed to be shared not only because I was excited about it, but because I know there are a lot of women out there who are ignorant as to what is available as far as good sports bras.

I'm not offended. It might help some one else find what they need. Like the camis last spring. I haven't seen the Nike+, but still can down load music onto my computer to load my mp3.

I started the couch to 5k last summer and decide to bail on it. Figured I'm too old to run. I kept getting interrupted by travel and ending up in a place where I can't run. I'm going to do another workout right now.

Not offended at all, in fact I was at Penneys last week to be fitted for a new bra and the lady was very nice who measured me for my new bras I bought two, not sports ones regular,I already had a sports bra and needed some new ones after I reached my goal. That was the last thing on my list because I lose there last well almost last this week I went and got new undies. emoticon .

I have heard of the Nike+ but since I am not a runner I don't think could justify the purchase, I just use my HRM when I exercise. Good for you getting new things to help on your journey, new toys really gives you motivation to keep going.
Proud of you for making the commitment to a healthy lifestyle. emoticon Now you can run in style. Sandy
