Baby Steps

Last week was my yearly physical and along with that the blood work they do. My cholesterol has been high the past few years and this year I knew would be no different. My first obstacle however was the scale. I wore my lightest clothes and prayed for the best. 15 pounds gained since last year…ugh. Not a surprise but still an ugh. At this point I have gained back 40 of the 50 pounds I had lost 5 years ago.

My husband said he would help me change my habits and would join me on a more healthy way of doing things. Our eating overall is not bad, it is just that I overeat and mostly carbs. I work for a major computer company and have the luxury of working from home. This can be a downfall though since #1 I don’t have to get dressed for work and can wear loose clothes and #2 I have open access to food all day. So talking with my husband about what eating plan he thought would work me he started naming off the things I should eat for lunch. The things he was naming …lean roast beef sandwiches for example….although I like roast beef I am not a cold cut sandwich person. He thought though that this would help me and that eating something like salads and chick peas etc was not the way to go. Those I would eat I told him and not the sandwiches. His comment was that I am always trying out new diets and I needed to find something that worked.

That IS the question I told him…what is going to work for me? I have tried many types of diets/programs starting back when I was 12….TOPS, Nature Slim, Scarsdale diet, WeightWatchers, Jenny Craig, Nutrisystem, South Beach and on and on. And how many books do I have on diets, eating right etc etc? How many times have I gone to the bookstore looking for yet another book that will have the answer to weight loss??? That magic pill so to speak???

So my journey is to find out what works for me…food wise, exercise wise. Often I get overwhelmed with doing everything at once. Baby steps I will start at first….mini goals for each week. This week is cardio 3 times, track my food and do Wii for 10 minutes for 5 of the days.

Oh and my blood work? Although my cholesterol is still higher than it should be, it was 11 points lower than last year and the bad cholesterol 12 points lower. A little yea for me! Baby steps…….
