Another lesson learned!

The refrigerator is empty. Ian and I are both tired. Its raining outside so we didn't feel like going to the grocery store for just one meal. We have eaten the same three meals (gumbo z'herbe (gumbo with turnip greens, mustard greens, and collards--- fantastic), black bean chili, and minestrone with chickpeas) for the last two weeks.
So, Ian suggested we go out to dinner. We used to eat out for dinner three to ten times per week. We can't afford to do that any more with 3 kids in college. And frankly, we don't want to. We have no control over what goes into our food in restaurants and we like knowing. This is our first foray into a restaurant since Christmas.
We chose Outback. Its relatively close and we have not been eating much meat. We made wise choices. Ian had the pork with mashed potatoes and green beans. I had the 6 oz. Sirloin with steamed broccoli and the blue cheese chopped salad with pecans --- I love that salad. Tonight I came home and tracked my food. Oneof those horrible surprises - the salad had more calories than the steak!!!
So the lesson for today is: look up what you are going to eat BEFORE you eat it.
The story still has a happy ending. I did not go over my calorie target for the day. We did not have any of the bread there - Ian makes bread home-made. So all in all, not bad, just too expensive in terms of money and calories.
