Night shift ugh.....

Sunday, January 24, 2010

Ok so I told you guys that I was taking a week off from here because I am tired and I am working night shift this week. Well, I have still counted my calories this week and have to admit that even though my eating times are off quite a bit, I am still eating healthy and sticking to my calorie limits. My question for the day however is, If you are someone that is used to working nights, what is your eating routine and how often and when do you eat? I am not used to night shift and while I am not doing many of them (and certainly will not be doing any much longer) I was just curious.

I'm sure working the nightshift alters your normal routine. However, if you stick to your eating habits (# of hours between meals) then hopefully things should translate over. I used to believe that if you ate after a certain time (before bed) that it was worse for you. Thankfully Spark busted that myth as your body metabolizes your food the same no matter what time of day. Hopefully the shifts aren't too bad. Take care.

I am a night shifter for 19 yrs. now...

What I typically do is eat breakfast when I get up (usually around 3pm) - try to do around 300 calories or so. Then I may eat some kind of a snack (about 200 cal) on my way to work (I drive into work around 6pm). Hopefully, I get all of my patients seen & meds passed by 10pm, and I try to eat my "lunch" (around 400 cal) sometime b/t 10p-12a, before I have to go make the rounds again. Then I shoot for my "dinner" (500 cal) somewhere around 3am. That puts me at 1400 cal for the day, and I also try to keep cut-up veggies and fruits (like grapes) on hand that are easy to eat while I'm charting.

Hope this helps... and good luck on the rest of your night shifts. I know how difficult it is for those who aren't used to it... believe me, I don't function well on the day shift either! LoL

I am normally only a day worker, so the schedule as really messed me up this week. I work at Winchester Medical Center on the heart floor and its a very busy unit. I have thought about joining the wellness center. Have you heard good things about it? I love your profile pic of the cat. I have 4 cats :) Thanks for the comment. As weird as it sounds, those comments are what keeps a person going. I really need to get my progress pics up here. I will do that soon. Take care

But you work all different shifts right? That would be hard. But you honestly look great!! Keep it up? Do you go to the wellness center?
