My friend Betty has been going out with a hiking group for some time now. She has come back with great stories of the beautiful things they see. I have to be honest, I have felt some jealousy hearing about her hikes. But I am very cautious about certain activites that will stress my knees since they are on the brink of being replaced, so I felt I could just listen and live vicariously. However, when she told me about a hike her group was doing at the Rocky Mountain Arsenal, and how relatively flat and easy a hike it was I couldn't stand it any longer. I signed up with the group and joined her on the walk.
What an amazing morning it turned out to be. I didn't quite know what to expect from the group, they all looked so young and fit on their website, but the organizer was great about making sure anyone who was "slower" wasn't left behind; the people in the group were very friendly and in our age group. And the hike itself was beautiful! Here is some of what we saw...
I decided to try something new and was thrilled with the outcome. I actually ended up doing 5 new things in the long run... I met up with a new group... Went to the Arsenal... Did a hike I was uncertain about... Tried a new restaurant (we went to lunch after the hike)... Tried a new food - shrimp tostada. Each thing took me out of my little comfort zone and made me push my horizons.
Thank you Betty for letting me join you and for helping me to grow. I look forward to the next hike we do - YES! I'm going to keep hiking (with caution); and I plan on trying new things as often as possible. Expanding our horizons and living a fuller life is as important as living a healthy life.
