Today...my breaking point?

Wednesday, January 20, 2010

Ttoday was a tough day for me. My troubled student finally crossed the line and assaulted me (twice). I left my room in tears and a little pain. I'm okay. Just sore. And very frustrated. I had oodles of paperwork to complete as a result. UGH! He did get a 30 days suspense as a result. Sad, but I'm hoping this helps others see that he needs more help than we can offer. I have personally dealt with this behavior for two years, but this has been going on longer than that. He needs helps and hopefully this is the wake up call everyone needs to help him. In the meantime, tomorrow I get to keep my other students safe....at least for 30 days.

Janine, that is so sad. Teachers are sometimes the only one who really get to know these students because parents have so many stressors in their life that they can't deal with another so they just ignore the problem. Others just label the kid bad or dumb and go on without any thought of helping. You are doing a job that is so important and I commend you for it. Like you said, hopefully this will be a wake up call. Just sorry you have to suffer for them to learn.

Wow! That sounds like all of my students! I teach ED... I'm so sorry to hear that you were attacked not once but twice! Why was the student put back into your classroom after the first assault?

Hopefully you can get a lot accomplished in the next 30 days without that student there! Definately work on what the other students do when others are being that aggresive (if you've not already done that).

I know for my homeroom I have arrangements with another teacher to send my kids to them if anyone starts fighting or attacking others!

    My prayers are with you!

Sorry that this happened to you! I firmly believe everything happens for a reason- not to justify the fact that you were assaulted, but like you said, maybe this will be a wake-up call and the child will receive the help that he needs. I would do EVERYTHING in my power to ensure that when he does return, plans are in place so that you are not at risk again; another adult in the class when he is in your room, notifying the principal if you see his behaviors starting to escalate, etc. I'll be thinking of you (and him).....

A very dear friend of mine is a sped teacher. Her first job was in a facility for extremely disturbed youngsters. She had several instances where students physically attacked her. She worked there a number of years, but decided that her health, both mental and physical, was in danger as she felt herself getting "burned out" as they say. She's been teaching sped in a regular school for many years and loves it. I retired from teaching last year, and I have to say that I have the highest regard and admiration for sped teachers. You are awesome!

wow, what the has this world come to? If we would have done that when I was in school, the teacher would have taken a fist to us. I wonder what parents teach their kids this day and age.(or don't teach them) I have a sixteen year old boy and if he ever does something like that at home or out, I will bust his ass.I still think the bible is right "spare the rod and spoil the child" I am sorry you had to go through that. Hope your next 30 days are alot better.

Wow! I am so sorry. Sometimes students come from backgrounds that we simply cannot make up for!
