I Want to Streak!

Friday, December 18, 2009

No, I'm not talking about running naked across a football field, I'm talking about achieving goals I set on SparkPeople. Oh, I'm doing fine on exercise, drinking water, eating fiber, taking a daily vitamin pill, walking, drinking milk, but I'm having a terrible time with my goal to get 8 hours sleep every night. Man, would I like to have even a week of that streak!

I'm sitting here yawning and thinking about it, because last night was a short one. I know sleep is important; I type through the fog of my sleepy head. I 'm hatching a plan to try to get more sleep, although I may need to be more alert in order to come up with a plan that has a chance of working. Will let you know of progress.

I rarely get 8 hours of sleep. Some people don't need that much sleep. If you are really concerned maybe you should check with your doctor. I do know I need at least 6 hours of sleep, under that I am very sluggish the whole day.

I go to bed about 10 pm and get up around 7am that does not mean I go to sleep right away.My legs bother me at night so I have to take 2 pm when I go to bed.

I often have the same problem. Sometimes I think it may have, dare I say, an age component. I have older relatives who have the same problem. There are some great articles on sleep on the SP health articles. I found some to be really helpful.

Hang in there and get some Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz's!

I've never been able to get in the 8 hours either. It happens maybe 1 time a week.

Well, you got my attention with the heading!

Have you ever tried Melatonin? It is a natural hormone that when we get older we produce less and less. I take it and it works great! Start slow though, 1 mg at first. For me, I have to plan on having 8 hours sleep when I take it, otherwise I am a little groggy. It's different for everyone. Here is what I found on WebMD:

    "What is melatonin?
Melatonin is a hormone made by the pineal gland, a small gland in the brain. Melatonin helps control your sleep and wake cycles. Very small amounts of it are found in foods such as meats, grains, fruits, and vegetables. You can also buy it as a supplement.

What does natural melatonin do in the body?
Your body has its own internal clock that controls your natural cycle of sleeping and waking hours. In part, your body clock controls how much melatonin your body makes. Normally, melatonin levels begin to rise in the mid- to late evening, remain high for most of the night, and then drop in the early morning hours.

Light affects how much melatonin your body produces. During the shorter days of the winter months, your body may produce melatonin either earlier or later in the day than usual. This change can lead to symptoms of seasonal affective disorder (SAD), or winter depression.1

Natural melatonin levels slowly drop with age. Some older adults make very small amounts of it or none at all."

    Hope this helps!

    Good Luck!
