Feed A Cold, Starve A Fever???

Thursday, December 17, 2009

Last Friday I babysat the little boy I sit with once in a while. He had a runny nose. He wasn't coughing at all, just the runny nose. Sunday I started sneezing and couldn't stop. Sunday evening I got the call. Can I babysit every day this week except Wednesday? I assured them that yes I could do that. Monday I woke feeling lousy. My head was stuffed up, sinus headache, coughing like crazy, but I had given my word and went off to babysit. I walked there. It is approximately 1.5 klms from my place to theirs. I get in their place and discover that hey I am not the only one feeling terrible. My charge was coughing like crazy, the two other children in the house were both coughing and wheezing and all had runny noses.
Tuesday I felt worse. I took the bus there. Luckily for me I only had to sit for two hours. I walked home. My winter coat felt very heavy on my shoulders as I walked slowly. When I got home I realized that even walking slowly I made it home in twenty minutes. I took a couple of cold tablets and went to bed. When I woke I was very dry. I tried to drink water and almost choked on it. I got hubby to go out and get me a big bottle of gingerale and some chicken noodle soup.
Between Tuesday evening and Wednesday evening I drank an entire two litre bottle of gingerale. I find it soothes my sore throat, whereas water does not. I could not stop eating either. I went through half a bag of cheese strings. I ate clementines as well as yogurt. I had toast and peanut butter. I ate two full cans of chicken noodle soup. I buy the healthy request kind from Campbell's because it is lower in sodium. I sort of tracked my food but I think I had a lot more than I wrote down. I took vitamins. I still have three days left this week to babysit. Yes I am planning on walking there today but I know I am getting a ride back home. At this moment I am feeling a bit better, but although I have been sleeping, it has not been good sleep. As soon as the cold tabs wear off I wake again. Maintaining healthy eating is hard at such times. I don't feel like oatmeal and the only fruit I want is oranges. If I had the ingredients I would have made my own soup but I didn't so settled for canned stuff. I have to admit I am not eating unhealthy either, just feel like I am starving and eat every time I wake. I am sure I will soon be better and back on track, but right now I am following what my body wants.
So much for getting my decorations up.

The one thing worse than having a bad cold is knowing that you have committed to work while you are feeling crappy!

I am in awe that you actually walked as much as you did - I would have wussed out and either taken the bus or a taxi! Good for you!

Hope you feel better today and by the weekend are totally over this!

    Hugs!

I feel for you. A week after we came back to SwedenI started feeling a cold coming on and I still have scratchy throat but nothing seems to come of it.

I'd also make you home made soup, but I figure transatlantic shipping of a Tupperware container of soup could raise a few eye brows at customs, so maybe I had better not... emoticon

Feel better soon. And don't worry too much about your eating until you feel better.

I'm with you, do what your body wants. I'd make you some home made chicken noodle soup and send it up, but by the time you got it you'd probably be well! You know how the postal service is! emoticon Get to feeling better. I've already had 2 colds this season and I'm hoping that's it! emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon
