I am sure some of you will see that title and wonder if I am talking about weight loss. Nope.
The job I work right now is great. I am at a school and I get to work with kids in kindergarten through 2nd grade on math skills. I love working with kids...but they just don't pay me enough. On top of that, I do not get paid for breaks (summer, etc.) I get paid for the holiday itself, but not all the rest of the days we are off, like at Christmas. For example, we get 2 weeks off for Christmas, and all I will get paid for is xmas day, the day after and New Year's day. Plus it is only 35 hours a week, not 40 (so paychecks are for 70 hours, not 80.) It has been getting harder and harder to make ends meet. My husband's job does not give him overtime like it used to, and his effort to find a second job has come up empty.
A few weeks ago I applied for a job in a home improvement distribution warehouse (I am talking huge warehouse people, not the store you would go to). I went to a hiring fair one Saturday, and walked out with a letter offering me a position. I will be making almost $2 more an hour. On top of that, it is 40 hours a week, year-round work. I will make at least $400 more a month to start, with regular raises at 3 months, 6 months, 18 months, after that yearly (if I remembering correctly). I feel like there will be more of an opportunity to move up at this new job. I will be able to save money, help pay more bills around the house, help provide more for my children....the list could go on.
Now, after that long explanation, is the reason for the title of this blog.
When I was offered the position, the gentleman told me they were trying to fill 2nd shift. I took it anyway, figuring that I need to at least get my foot in the door. There could be the possibility to move to 1st shift later.
Where I am at now, I work where my kids go to school. I see them all the time. There are days I feel I could use a break, but when all is said and done, I love being able to see my children while I am at work. When I start the new job (in January), pretty much the only time I will get to see them is on the weekends. I will be working 4pm to 1230am, Monday thru Friday. My husband works pretty much the same hours. My mom and dad are going to keep them during the week for me.
I don't know how well I am going to be able to adjust to that. I am around my kids all the time now, but come the first of the year, I won't be able to see them as much. I plan on going to their school maybe 2 or 3 days a week for a couple hours to volunteer. But it still won't be the same.
I hope I am making sense here. I have just been asking myself lately if I am doing the right thing by taking this job. I am doing it to be able to provide a better financial outlook for my family. I am doing it so I will be able to get everything my kids need, without having to borrow money from my parents. I can think of a dozen reasons to validate why I am making the choice I am making, but am I doing the right thing?
