Well, I Did It...

Tuesday, November 10, 2009

Well, after having numerous conversations with myself for over a month, I finally "officially" signed up yesterday to walk a 5K on November 21 for St. Jude Hospital. I wasn't going to post this, but I felt that if I did, then I definitely would not back out. Plus people have already donated money in my name so it would be really tacky to not go through with it. I also told my 81 year old mom about it today when I took her to get her hair done. Her reply was, "I sure would like to be there to see you cross that finish line." My heart filled with pride and somehow I will make sure she's there.

Am I scared. Yes, but not in the way you might think. I'm afraid of coming in last though I don't think I have ever come in last in anything I have ever attempted. But, I've never done this type of event on a walker. It's scary not being familiar with the route we'll be walking. Will I be able to see all the bumps, cracks and holes with all the people around me? I terrified of falling and cracking my head on the asphalt. I worry if my hip joints will be able to do it. I have gone the distance on my gazelle many times, but that is so different then walking on pavement. I worry about my hands. Are they going to hold up, especially if it's cold.

But it's these same fears that pushed me into doing it. If I think I can't do something, I will kill myself trying to prove me wrong. It a character flaw. I know. However, after I've completed the walk, I will have peeled another layer of "stuff" off of me that is holding me back. I will be lighter for having completed my goal.

Pray for me and wish me luck!!!

It is really great that you are doing this Pam and I'm sure you will finish it just to see your Mum's face when you cross the finish line. Is there an online address for donating money? I would love to sponsor you.

I have no doubt that you will do great. It shouldn't matter which place you come in as long as you finish the 5K. I am pretty sure you can get the route of the race so you can check out the course a couple of days ahead so you won't be off.
I am proud of you and you are a great inspiration.

emoticon emoticon emoticon Having the vision to enter the race already means you have achieved a personal best- just by daring to dream and taking steps in that direction. So, put away that fear of coming in last- you are already a winner out to embrace your personal best! emoticon emoticon

I am so proud of you, Warrior/Sister! I know you will be fine - they don't particularly plan these routes to trip people up. You'll just start out a bit slower than the "normal" walkers/runners in the pack, let them have some space and you'll be able to see just fine. You never cease to amaze me, my friend. I feel like such a piker when I read your plans, but it's not entirely my fault! This time of year they don't plan much up here in the frozen north. I'm looking forward to the spring battle, when walks and runs are going on. I promise you, dear SparkFriend, I will sign up for one when I have one to sign up for!

    Love you, Sister!

Pam, I am so excited for you! OMG, you are going to do this and you and your mom will be so proud! You will begin planning your next one within minutes of completing this 5k. Remember, you are setting your own personal best by entering and completing this race. Then, you can make improvements with each new race. It is amazing how people reach out and help and encourage others in a race. YOU CAN DO THIS! You might be able to pull up a map of the route on the race website just to give you a feeling of comfort in "knowing" the course. If you haven't been doing much outside, you really should plan to go out for a while each day - it will help you determine how much and what kind of clothing to wear the day of the race.
Gosh, I am so thrilled for you - I know you will be awesome. Go get 'em WARRIOR! emoticon emoticon emoticon
