Poem for the day - e. e. cummings

Tuesday, November 10, 2009

DH and I are going to some friends' home for Thanksgiving - I'm in charge of dessert, DH is in charge of a T-day prayer/reading. It's an ecumenical group, so it needs to be either non-denominational, or interfaith. DH and I were talking last night about what he might read, he said he wants each person to say what they're thankful for. So I shared this with him, my all-time favorite e. e. cummings poem - and he wants me to read it as my part of the T-day prayer.

Here it is, today's poetry moment:

i thank You God for most this amazing
day: for the leaping greenly spirits of trees
and a blue dream of sky;and for everything
which is natural which is infinite which is yes

(i who have died am alive again today,
and this is the sun's birthday;this is the birth
day of life and love and wings;and of the gay
great happening illimitably earth)

how should tasting touching hearing seeing
breathing any - lifted from the no
of all nothing - human merely being
doubt unimaginable You?

(now the ears of my ears awake and
now the eyes of my eyes are opened)
