This is it! I've been here 3 months, lost 25 pounds (1/3 of the way to my goal). So I've been trying to figure out how to approach the winter months - those times where I usually sit around a gain weight because it's too cold or too wet to do anything physical. PFAUGH! No such thing...just do it indoors! I've been stead in October on the walking, hitting my goal of 15 miles a week. So I came up with my plan of action:
November - 20 miles/week by end of month
December - 25 miles/week by end of month
January - 30 miles/week by end of month
NO EXCUSES! It's indoor walking, so who cares if it's snowing, hailing, sleeting or just freezing outside - strap on the shoes and WALK!
The next trick is to adjust my eating - I've increased my walking, but I've also increased my eating, so I haven't been seeing the weight loss of 2 lbs a week that I'd like - I've kept it to at least 1 lb, but I've got dreams and I want to reach them BEFORE summer. So, in looking at my desire to use seasonal fruits and vegetables, I've decided that the perfect menu item to add to my winter meals is SOUP! Yes, lots of vegetable, bean and rice/pasta soup - at least 3 times a week, maybe more. There are so many ways to cook and flavor healthy soup, that I'm actually excited about making a pot every week. And a good healthy soup means eating less of the richer foods normally eaten this time of year.
Of course, I'll have to contend with the holiday blues as well - this time of year the emphasis is big on Family - something I don't have a lot of, and none of them nearby. My son will be spending 4 days at his father's for Thanksgiving, opening me up to the longest time away from him ever, and possibly the most depressing Thanksgiving ever. But I won't succumb to eating through my depression - instead, I will WALK my way through those 4 days.
Well, here's to the winter weight loss - if all goes well, the fat will melt off me like a gentle spring thaw, giving me reasons to keep smiling even when the holiday blues are at their worst. I might just have to buy a new dress for the holiday party at work - but nothing too fancy - I won't fit in it for long!!!
