A Day in the Kitchen

Saturday, October 24, 2009

The day started with my DH and DS headed off to squirrel hunting. My oldest DD left for a youth outing with our church. So, while the other little ones did a few chores and played for the day, it was off to the kitchen for me (for almost the WHOLE day). I started by taking broccoli, green beans, and carrots that I bought at a local farmer's market and blanched them for freezing. Then onto the green peppers and onions for the freezer as well. I like to lay them flat on parchment lined cookie tray and flash freeze them for about 15 minutes, then I put them into their freezer bags. This keeps them from sticking together. So when you just want a handful of one of these items, it's easy access and you don't have to defrost the whole bag. Next I pulled a chicken soup base that I had made a month ago out of the freezer to start dinner for tonight. Having done all of this, I moved onto baking Mini Nut Rolls for the girls' cookie business. (They normally do them, but I had the itch to help them out since they were busy today.) I was able to complete a little over 12 dozen. Boy, they take some work! Lastly, I made homemade whole wheat buttermilk biscuits to go with our chicken rice soup. Now, I'm finally sitting down and relaxing for a few minutes...but I still need to work out. Ahhhhh....okay, it's off to get ready for BootCamp and WATP!

Have a super Sunday!

P.S. My 11-year DS brought home four squirrels. Now I have to come with a good recipe to try for this. I guess there's a first for everything. :)

I've always wanted to get in the kitchen on one day and prepare all my meals. The closest I've gotten is cooking one meal a day for a wekk and freezing the leftovers in individual serving sizes. That actually worked well for us. Wonder why I don't do it any more?

I have seen recipes for them in Joy of Cooking (Erma Rombauer), including instructions & diagrams for how to skin them. :o)

I sent this to a male friend who just moved to upstate NY and he lives on the borders of a state parkland preserve. I sent it as a joke. Oh dear. I have squirrel houses here and they have lived on the property for over 40 years. I am a real down to earth natural woman and have done a lot with gardening and fishing, but squirrels....NO. I can't imagine eating one. Sorry. Take these recipes though. And I guess....enJOY them. :0))) emoticon Linda
