Awareness Is Where It All Starts!

Sunday, October 18, 2009

Well I've just completed my 1st full week with Spark People! What did I learn?

I have, for the 1st time in my life, forced to be totally AWARE of what is going in to my body and it has been a real eye opener. I have completely internalized the fact that diets don't work . . . life style changes do. They don't even have to be major changes. I have never had a weight problem until middle life. Then I went in to a state of denial. . . "it's only a few pounds, I can take them off easily whenever I want" however, those few pounds became 40 pounds as I put those "few pounds" on year after year. I have taken those"few pounds" off from time to time by Atkins or Diet Center but then, after patting myself on the back they somehow reappeared.

It has taken 13 years for those "few pounds" to accumulate to 40. THEY AREN'T COMING OFF BY TUESDAY!!! HELLO!!!! I realize that by a few lifestyle changes they will come off, they will come off gradually but they will keep coming off and by lifestyle changes, they will stay off.

The awareness and insight gained by this 1st week has already produced changes. "Do I really want to have those couple of beers while watching football?" "Do I really want to have that extra piece of dessert?" "How badly do I really want that extra serving?" And you know what??? If I really want it . . . I have it! HOWEVER then I have to go through the pain of logging it and seeing it in a report. I guess it's kind of ironic . . . there is a direct corelation . . . what I see on the daily food report, I see on my hips!

Awareness leads to making THOUGHTFUL choices! This is where it all starts, not just stuffing it in your face with reckless abandon like I have been doing over the past years. Those thoughtful choices are now coming through this wonderful site.

Now that I am fully aware, my 2nd week will be focused on more positive choices. . . wish me luck.

I would love to hear thoughts from other people who are only a few weeks in to Spark and also those who are farther along and can provide some insight looking back to when they started.

I'm only a few days into SparkPeople, but I totally agree! It's rather shocking to keep track of what I eat...but I'm learning a LOT! Good luck!
