#106: Reaching Out Beyond Our Comfort Zones

Tuesday, October 13, 2009

I had a pleasant experience tonight. I was at dinner with a friend when we saw a group that eventually totaled 24 people gather in an adjacent section of the restaurant. We wondered whether they were celebrating someone's birthday or were maybe an investment group.

As the coordinator passed our table, I asked about their meeting. Turns out that they are all involved in cat rescue and in neutering and spaying of feral cats and getting them their shots.

As an owner of three stray cats, now all indoor animals, I had to offer to help them with fundraising, publicity, professional writing or project management. Their coordinator seemed thrilled at the offer and I sensed I would soon make a number of new friends dedicated to saving the lives of our feline friends. It appeared to be a perfect match.

The funny thing is that I often must force myself to be outgoing, frequently finding that stepping out of my comfort zone makes me a tad uneasy. But, as I learned tonight, when opportunity knocks, we must be prepared to answer the door and open it wide in order to enhance the quality of our lives.

Where this chance encounter will lead, I do not yet know. I do know, though, that after I introduced myself, I felt much better about myself.

Have you enjoyed such a random meeting that later provided you with pleasure, challenge and new friends? If so, will you please share the details?

The lesson learned tonight is that by reaching outside of our normal comfort zones more often, perhaps our lives will be more greatly enriched. And that can't be a bad thing, can it?

    Follow Your Dream
    by: Amanda Bradley

    Follow your dream.
Take one step at a time and don't settle for less,
    Just continue to climb.
    Follow your dream.
If you stumble, don't stop and lose sight of your goal
    Press to the top.
For only on top can we see the whole view,
    Can we see what we've done and what we can do;
Can we then have the vision to seek something new,
    Press on.
    Follow your dream.

HOw wonderful that they take care of the feral cats. Some parts of that must be downright ummmm painful.

As for you, I don't believe in random. I think God brought you and the cat rescuers together for His reasons which may or may not be the cats. I would never have guessed that you were an introvert, Lou. That makes your story extra special because you really put yourself out there.

In education, they often say that we seldom learn when we stay inside our comfort zone. I really appreciate your blog on a number of levels, Lou. As for a story from me I know it has happened, I just need to prime the memory pump; when I do, i'll be back.

I remember the day I first came to check out one of the efficiency apartments where I am now living. I worked a full time job at the time, and never dreamed my life would change so drastically. After living here for about a year, the former owner got very ill one day, and ended up having a major heart attack. They performed surgery on him, and as he was recovering from that, he contracted some horrible lung infection. Within days, he passed away. I began to help his wife, by writing receipts for her when I wasn't working. Then, a few months later, I had to take a leave of absence from my job, to have hip replacement surgery. I was supposed to have 3 more surgeries, which never happened. But, I was never released to go back to work. When the owner's wife went bankrupt, she moved away, leaving me here to run the place. She hired a professional property manager to oversee the payment of bills, etc. It was during the months while she was still here that I met my husband.

I never would have imagined that by writing an occasional receipt, I would become the live-in manager of this place. New owners took over about 3 1/2 years ago, and we were told our services would no longer be needed. It was devastating. But, I had been praying about this for months; and within 2 days of the new owners taking over, I found myself back in the office. It was supposed to be "just secretarial". LOL Within a couple of months, I was back to being manager, and my husband became the part time maintenance man. When his job ended, and he struggled for so long to find a new job, this opened up again, and he became the full time maintenance man.

Over the years, I have met countless people. There have been so many times when the door was opened for me to tell them about God's love for them. Every day is a new adventure.

What an awesome opportunity. I have had many experiences where I have put myself out of my comfort zoned only to be very blessed in return. I think of the time that I volunteered for our church child care center, we offered FREE childcare for troops serving in the first Iraq war; there was a base in my old neighborhood. At any rate - it was an awesome experience - giving back to those who defend our country. I did not make any lasting friendships, as military families are always on the move; but it was a great opportunity to serve.

I pray that you are blessed in your new adventure.
    God Bless!
