Tina's Wake Up Call

Okay, so here I am, four days away from my birthday. No big deal to me, my birthday, and I mean that honestly. Except, this year, it's kind of a big birthday, one of those "milestone" years. The big 5-0. Even to this "my birthday is no big deal" girl, this particular year makes me take pause. Many things flash through my brain: how the he!! can I be 50? Where did the years go? How can I be 50 with an almost 8 year old son? Oh my God I'm 50!! But all of this pales in comparison to something that happened last night.
I got home last night and DH was already at home. He was sitting at the breakfast bar on the laptop computer. Sitting on the counter between he and I was the mail, as usual. As we chatted, I flipped through the mail, as usual. What wasn't usual was how DH was watching me flip through the mail. Usually, he'd be intently reading the computer screen while he talked to me, and I'd only figure out later that he really wasn't listening to me talk about what's on tap for tomorrow, or the weekend, or we've been invited to this, or little T wants to do that..you know, the typical stuff many husbands pretend to be paying attention to but don't..at least my husband is like that and I've learned to live with..
But last night was different, his eyes never left me. He watched everything I did as I chatted and flipped that mail...then I came to a piece of mail addressed to me...and I looked at it, and I looked up at him, and he looked at me.....it was from.....are you ready folks? I can't believe I'm even saying this...it was from..... AARP gulp. AARP. Am I really getting mail from AARP? Well, yes I am, and I didn't just get one piece of mail, I got TWO. I have a hyphenated last name, and for anyone who has a hyphenated last name, I'm sure you understand what I am about to say: I get mail with every itteration of my name you can imagine, the hyphen there, the hypen not there, in only my married name, in only my maiden name, with my formal name (Christine), with my nickname (Tina). NEWSWEEK sends me mail using my maiden name as my first name and my married name as my last name. So AARP wanted to make sure they found me, they sent me TWO letters...
I looked up at my two-years younger than I am husband... he smiled. Then he said:
are you ready??
"I guess I just can't be seen with you anymore."
and he smiled some more.
He will turn 50 in two years. I can't wait...
I still haven't opened the letters.
Have a nice day...
