There is a bit of insanity in dancing that does everybody a great deal of good. ~ Edwin Denby
I've been attending a zumba class for a few weeks now and have absolutely loved it. For those of you who don't know, Zumba is an aerobic workout that incorporates latin dance steps. It's an incredibly difficult but immensely fun at the same time.
I've been following Mandisa Hundley on Twitter. Here's her pic from when she was on the show:
For those of you who don't know who she is, she was a contestant on American Idol a few years ago (the year that Taylor Hicks won and Chris Daughtry was 3rd, much to my dismay...just my opinion). ;o)
At any rate, she's been on a journey to lose weight and has been one of my inspirations on this journey. Part of that has been creating a video blog of sorts where she talks about different things she's done along the way to lose weight or how she's worked through some problems. Right now, she's trying to break a plateau (much like many people on here) and decided to step up her cardio a notch by taking a zumba class.
Here's a link to her video about the experience:
I've loved dancing and music from the time I was little. I'm not very skilled, mind you, but it's fun and (I gotta admit) my favorite way to workout. I think it's because I don't really feel like I'm working out. The first day, I did a lot better than I thought I was going to. Towards the end of the class I felt myself tiring out and my abs were killing me. The next day, I definitely felt the abs. The second class, I felt like I did worse than the first class. Part of that was probably because I was thinking about the steps far too much and wasn't really letting loose and having fun with it.
As time has gone on, I feel like I've gotten better (don't know for sure, though, cuz we don't face the mirror anymore) ;o) And I can tell that I'm letting loose more and that I'm getting the hip movements down more. I actually caught myself on Sunday, as we were singing in church, swaying my hips a lot more than I ever have before. It kinda scared me and I had to reign it in cuz...well, outside of the zumba class, church isn't the most appropriate of all places to be doing that, lol. :)
Today, I switched the "station" I was listening to on Pandora. It was one that is a blend of peppy, up-beat Christian music with artists like Mandisa, Relient K, Seven Places, and Britt Nichole. Well, one of the songs that we dance to during our Zumba class came on. Incidentally, it's one of my favorite ones to dance to. At any rate, it was "Catchafire" by TobyMac. Holy cow, was it ever hard not to get up and do the routine we've been taught. I caught myself swiveling back and forth in my little chair (doing the hip action and sitting version of the feet, of course). Since my "office" is actually the entrance to the office and is...well, out in the open.
The whole point being that I think I've found something that I absolutely love and would highly encourage others to do. I will warn you, though, it can be kinda rough on the knees and lower back, so if you have had injuries BE CAREFUL!
But, also remember to have fun with it!
