Sunflowers on Monday

Tuesday, September 15, 2009

A holiday week can mess up a guy's biking schedule. So it felt good to get on my bike yesterday and ride.

My riding buddy Jason had called me over the weekend to tell me that his 'good' bike was out of the shop. His rear wheel set him back $200, but was supposed to be indestructable. Jason was ready to go.

Where I live, Ford will farm their undeveloped property with soybeans or sunflowers. It's probably a tax write-off of some kind. But it's nice to go for a city ride, and all of a sudden come across a giant field of sunflowers. Who doesn't like sunflowers?

Jason and I met at the gas station so he could fill his tires. He was grumbling, rightly so, that for $200, it would have been nice for the shop to properly inflate his tires. FYI, this is probably THE nicest bike shop around. They specialize in triathalon equipment, and they don't even bother with family or kid bikes. Well, we got off on our ride. We hadn't gone more than a mile or two when Jason needs to pull over. His back wheel is already out of true, and is rubbing on the brakes. As we investigate further, almost ALL of the spokes are loose. They were either not tightened at all, or the wrong spoke nipples were used, or something. It was a very dangerous situation. He was cursing up and down, and there wasn't much I could do to help. Poor guy has had some bad luck with his bikes since we've been riding. He called someone for a ride, and I left him behind, standing sad and alone under the glow of a street light. Lol.

In other news, I got Personal Trainer: Walking for my Nintendo DS. It's kind of a pedometer game, but it really just tracks your activity. It's not really a game. But I'm wearing my pedometer for the past few days, and I took a two mile walk at lunch yesterday to see some results in the app.

I haven' t lost any weight lately. Lazy lazy.

Usually I have my girl with me on the weekends. This weekend, the girls will be out of town for a wedding. I can have a grown-up weekend, but I don't really know what to do with myself.

Well, not much else to report I guess. Latah!

I got an iPod Nano from my hubby for our 25th (wowza) and it has a pedo. I shocked myself by going for a 40 minute run and burning through almost 4,500 steps. Nike+ said I'd just scaled a tall building. Too funny. He got me the Nike+ "pill" to go in my shoe, too, but it turns out the receiver is required, even with the 5G Nano. Bummer. (Not too bad of a bummer, I must say.)

Gorgeous photo of the flower field btw. :)

The sunflower field was awesome. Your friend's bike experience, not so much. I'm sorry to hear that the bike is conspiring against him. It's hard enough to get into physical activity, and even harder when new reasons to not exercise pop up on their own. Hopefully, he will get it repaired properly and then get in a few awesome bikerides with you to spur him on. He is lucky to have you for a friend.

those sunflowers are so lovely! I should take my camera on my next bike ride, its pretty where I live. I've been neglecting my bike lately in favor of the gym, but they really frown on folks taking pictures there...hmm wonder why? LOL You've inspired me to ride again, so thanks!

Gotta agree with SPARROW147 as my first thought too... emoticon Second thought was that I'd be grumbling too if I were in Jason's bike shoes. Seems that the forces of the universe are conspiring against his fitness time. emoticon I can see that you have motivated him majorly to have gone from gently nudging to him spending $200 to be able to get back in his saddle and ride with you. You should maybe give him such extra encouragement so that he doesn't give up the fitness ghost. emoticon Good to see you back in the saddle and on trek! and sunflowers to boot. I bet you are feeling great. emoticon

I was totally thinking about getting hat walking for the DS. Let me know what you think of it. I wish I had a giant field of sunflowers. If i'm lucky I can maybe find a giant field of corn. Not the same.
We definitely need to find out what you do with your grown up weekend. Keep us informed Al.
