Adjectives I never thought would be used about me

Strong! Buff! Stunning! Skinny!

In the last 30 days each of these adjectives have been used about me. ME!

I'm 53 years old. In January 2008 I weighed the most I'd ever weighed. My BMI was at 30--I was obese. Today I weigh 173, and my bmi is 24-- healthy weight. I've struggled with my weight my whole life--until now. Now, it's just my life.

I did it by counting calories and exercising. And I do it now by eating healthy and doing what I love. I no longer count calories, I just eat yummy fruit and vegetables. I no longer exercise, I bike for the joy of biking.

In August I biked 680 miles. This year I've biked over 2060 miles and walked over 180. And I met two of my challenges. I biked a century. I biked a tour with hard climbs and did it.

My goals for the next 12 months. Finish with as close to 3000 total miles out doors for the year as I can. With walking and biking, that's 800 more miles. And most important, I want to keep the weight I've lost off this winter. Last winter, I gained 1/2 of it back and spent this summer losing it again. I know I will have to exercise this winter--I'm in Minnesota and I can't bike outdoors year round. But I'm going to look for a joy activity so that it won't be exercise any more.

For me, winter is just different exercising and it's nice to get a change of pace. I've got an elliptical in the house and dvd's to do. I try to still bundle up and get out once a week for a walk. I have yak-tracks so I don't slip and last year found a path I normally run is plowed all winter. Don't let the MN winter keep you from exercising.

It's good to finalize your 2009 goals now, especially as we are coming to the end of our outdoor exercise season. It will help you be far more realistic.

I've been walking the dogs and running outside - I too am worried about what will happen as soon as it gets slick!

I totally understand you! I live in Mn also and have taken up running....but what to do once the cold weather hits? I'm trying to decide what my course of action will be now...i don't want to wait out winter and start again in the spring. I think your biking is wonderful. I grew up in the Black Hills and it seems you biked around Mt. Rushmore. Very cool. Sounds like you have a new ferver for life due to the biking. loved your blog!
