What is a RE-BIRTHDAY?
Thursday, September 03, 2009
I've gotten a couple of people asking me what a re-birthday is. Well simply put, it's the day when I had gastric bypass surgery.
But it really means more than that to me. It's the day my surgeon gave me a new life, I was literally reborn and not only was a newborn in learning new habits with eating and exercising. But also in learnin about myself. My strength, and ability and how far I could REALLY push myself. It was about exploring my limitations and doing what I had never been able to do before to create a new me!
It was about reaching emotional lows and realizing what life was like...REALLY like...as a fat person. About what happiness meant then and what it means now. It also meant emotional highs and feeling things I had NEVER felt before. (I was obese my entire life, even when I was in elementary school).
My re-birthday is about exploring how people view me and how I view myself and recognizing how that viewpoint has changed through the year as I lost 121 lbs.
In essence it's a time of reflection and recommittment. The re-birthday doesn't just have to be for those who are going through Gastric Bypass, I recommend it to everyone who wants to celebrate the new you! and keep reminding yourself of how far you have come!
The re-birthday is a time to celebrate our accomplishments instead of berating ourselves for what we could have done better.
You deserve it!
Take care everyone!
